A question for the girls!
If any of you are like me, you dread stepping on the scale a few days before your TOM. An entire month's worth of weight-loss can be "undone" (psychologically) just by that annoying little visitor. And every time I see those numbers go up, I'm convinced this will be the time they WON'T go back down.
So I'm curious...
On average, how many lbs of (water) weight do you gain, if any, right before your TOM?
Do you avoid the scale completely? Do you take your weigh-in with a grain of salt those days? Do you scream and cry and try to flush the scale down the toilet?
I just did a search on this topic because I'm experiencing the same thing! My weight went up five pounds! I weighed at the same time of day, no clothes on, and I was so upset.
Now that my cycle has ended, I've dropped those 5 basically overnight.
I assume when I weight at TOM it will be several pounds higher, keep eating well, and just wait it out.
I had the same problem too. I saw an increase in my weight too. My friend that I'm doing a weight-loss challenge with ended up gaining 7 lbs from it and was very frustrated. Just remember, it's our curse, but it does go away and so will the water weight. Good luck gals!

4-5 pounds eac time mt TOM rolls around. it blows :(
^it does blow. Usually I gain 3-5 lbs give or take, but this month I either didnt see a change or I dropped at least 2 lbs before my TOM bloat started. Not 100% and i wont find out till the end of next week. Boo.
Oh man...I was gonna come on here and search for answers to this question. I feel like I gained 10 pounds over night. TOTM is about to rear its ugly head and besides being an emotional basket case, all I wanted to do yesterday is eat bread and cheese. Not bad enough that we have to retain water, but then crave every calorie laden, carb and fat filled goodie on the planet.
Anyway...sorry about the little rant...I haven't gained since my last weigh in last Thursday...but I haven't lost either which tells me I probably have about one to two pounds of water on (I've been losing consistently 1.5 lbs/week the past month and even though I've had cravings, I haven't eaten more than 1500 - 1600/day and my workouts have been consistent). So I'm in the same boat as Gem...HOPING I actually had a loss this week, but won't know till the dreaded curse is over. Damn. :(
Gotta admit, I'm sitting here (usually very calm about weigh ins gain or lose) and I'm freaking wondering if I hit a plateau...will the scale start to go down again...oh woah is me...but it's probably just freaking hormones. Damn curse. Sorry...another little rant. I'm done now.
haha i soooo crave all the junk too!
SUUUUUCKS
idk rly how much i fluctuate durin this time, prly around 5lbs.
i dont rly avoid the scale as im curious just what the numbers are doin but i sorta brush it off since i know what causes the spike.
I am totally with you on this on, sistah! My TOTM is next week, and I am dreading getting on the scale... I get frustrated very easily, even just when the scale seems to get stuck, much less move up.
I am considering NOT getting on the scale next week, but am afraid that this will hinder my momentum and motivation to stay on track. I'm trying to lose one pound a week, harder than it sounds because I am already in a normal BMI range (5'9" 146, GW is 140.)
I am trying to keep my eye on what the scale will read in two weeks -- hopefully TWO pounds less than where I am right now. That is going to be my prize for staying on track despite bloat and cravings (Easter candy!)
Does anybody have any tricks to get through the inevitable weight gain without feeling like throwing in the towel?
I think I'm the only one that tends to lose at the start of my period haha
I feel your pain. All of you. (except you, shg_chiquita. *grumble*)
I'm up 3 pounds despite being perfect all week (in preparation for an Easter binge), and I'm hoping it's just water weight from my TOM. I can't be sure because I'm a little absent-minded so I forgot when it's due.
I'm thinking it HAS to be close, because I've had crazy cravings for the past three days (for foods I normally don't even like), and I've been way bloated.
Normally I don't weigh myself during this time because it's depressing, but I have to know where I stand this week so I know if I have room to splurge a bit at Easter.
(As an aside, don't you HATE it when you get your monthly on a major holiday? I get mine every single holiday and it's the worst! Sometimes it will come a week late or early, JUST so it can coincide with a holiday. I swear my uterus is doing it on purpose because it hates me.)
It actually doesn't bother me because I know that it's only temporary water weight gain AND after my body gets rid of it I feel lighter than before I started my period. Just remind yourself that it is normal and most likely no one else notices. My boyfriend thinks i'm crazy when I tell him that I feel bloated. If he can't tell I assume that no one else can. :)
I've put on as much as 10 lbs of water weight before. Now that I'm on the pill I only put on about 5 usually, but it still makes me feel ucky. However, I know it's just temporary so I don't get too worked up about it. I just try to drink plenty of water and keep working out, even if I don't feel like it. It helps
On average, I put on between 4-7 lbs. I have put on as much as 10 and as few as 2. Although I know it all drops back off, usually by the third or fourth day, i always freak out. I also tend to eat more during that week, so I usually just make my goal to not gain that week. I avoid the scale, but even that is hard. Drink lots of water, and limit sodium intake, this helps!
Yep, dealing with that right now....grrrr. My starting weight Jan. 1st was 176. As of last week, I was down to 165....very excited. This morning, 2 days into my period, I ignored my better judgement and stepped on the scale....174!! Aaagghhh! I know that it's not a "real" number......water weight, whatever, but it still sucks to see those 170s again. Next time, I am going to really not allow myself to step on the scale from about 2 or 3 days before or after my period. Not worth it!
yeah, its horrible!! i gain a few pounds, which i dont mind so much, my stomach goes huge too tho!!! big enough for my pants to feel uncomfortable!!! thats what bothers me
feeling much better after reading ALL your replies....I am not alone! YEPPI!
a few days overdue, feeling horrible right now, gained 5 pounds overnight!!!! have edema, feeling cold (its sunny outside!) and incredibly sleepy and tired which keeps me from working out
and to top it off, cravings for carbs, breads and sweets which I normally have under control, just not NOW!
HELP!!! any advice how to deal with it? anyone else with sleepiness and edema issues? THXXXXXXX
Period Next Week - Major PMS This Week.
I am so Billy Bob Thorton right now. Next week the physical pain starts. ![]()
Usually I just try to stay warm by curling up on the couch under a big blanket when ever I can and I eat a lot of Advil. Also I try to stay away from people untill I can discriminate mortal enemies from family and friends. May the cloud of despair clear soon.
The scale? It's the least of my concerns.
BAM! Instant five pounds. It sucks.
