Question on Knee Damage

Quote  |  Reply

After integrating cycling into my normal cardio routine, I fear I have damaged my knees. It doesn't seem to fit with normal runners knee. The best way I can describe it is a feeling of heat underneath the kneecaps, sensations of fibrous "tearing" around the kneecap when engaged in exercise, and a general burning sensation on the knee. Tried reading around, and all I could find about these particular symptoms was possible nerve damage. I'm finding that the pain returns now even when I'm doing relatively controlled exercises, like squats. Any ideas, and if you've had this, tips for damage control?

I would like to get in on this one hoping to see some answers. I have a similar feeling - symptoms in my knees. I walked a 11 mile hike on Saturday, took Sunday off, walked, jogged, ran for 40 minutes total Monday and today I biked 50 minutes in the morning and did strength training in the afternoon. However as I attempted to do roman leg dips with weight (one leg on a bench, other out in front, like a lunge and then dipping with two dumbells) I was in serious pain and had to stop. A trainer told me to ice my knees when I got home.

Have been having issues for a while and was considering x-rays at an orthopedic. Knee caps looked red, tender to touch and swollen after today. Sometimes even walking up and down the stairs can be a task. Bending down to play with my daugter can cause pain in my knees. I even have some residual pain when sitting at my desk at work and have to stretch my legs out.

I am 215 lbs, 5' 10" and on my way down to 190 from 242. I want to think carrying extra weight for a long time has contributed, but just not sure. I should be getting/feeling better as i drop weight, right? Any replies to ftay or myself would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a doctor, but it could be as simple as arthritis in the knees.  Sometimes extra weight can bear down on your knees, but simple arthritis can happen over time in virtually anyone's knees.  It also could be a ligament problem.  I would call your PCP.  If your PCP doesn't help you then call an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee's.

Could be the beginning of osteoarthritis, it comes and goes for me.  Some minimal pain, feeling of fullness and warmth, seems puffy?!  Or, maybe something else...
