Question for those with long-term bulimia
This is the most frustrating, overwhelming and backwards situation ever, curious to know if anyone else relates:
bulimic for 4ish years although more recovered than not in the past 2. Every time I am healthy for long periods of time (and by that I mean by the book: eating recommended calories, exercising, everything...) I end up gaining weight because my metabolism is all f-ed up. So then if I binge and purge I don't gain weight as fast so it's like I'm being punished for good behavior and rewarded for bad.
And just to add, before the criticism starts: Yes I have been in treatment and yes I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to nutrition and yes it seems I have exhausted all options. I have a nutritionist, therapist, endocrinologist, acupuncturist, GP and I have seen several specialists both MDs and homeopathic docs. AND I've been on thyroid meds, which have not done a damn thing...
I would so appreciate hearing anyone's thoughts or opinions. At this point it seems I never hear anything new...
Smathless,
I have no words of advice, only words of empathy. I feel the same way. I know that if I purge I can lose weight and so I always feel on the verge of resorting to that. Becuase when I eat well I gain weight and it seems like the weight gain will never stop. I have been bulimic for about 12 years now and also more in recovery for the past 3.
Like I said, I have no advice; I can only tell you that I know your frustration.
Hi Smathless,
I can relate - I've had bulimia on and off for 10 years and the same thing happens to me. I've read that when you binge and purge you only get rid of 50% of the calories and when I first read that it was a huge incentive for me to NOT binge and purge. But of course it didn't last long and I was back to bingeing and purging and seeing the scale go down the following morning.
Now I just try to remind myself that it's not REAL weight loss. And EVEN IF IT WAS REAL it's not the way I want to be losing weight. It is sooo sooo difficult though when you're eating "right" and you're gaining weight.
What are your stats? You said you're on thyroid meds, is it under-active?
Take care.
