Question about Maintaining.

Quote  |  Reply

I have lost weight and have 4-6 more pounds I wouldn't mind losing.  I know that to lose weight I eat less.  What I have never learned is maintenance.  I always just continue in lose lose lose mode.  This time I'd prefer to sensibly stay at a maintenance level.
So my question is (if i generally lose a pound a week) then is it reasonable to assume if my activity stays the same and I want my weight to stay the same -
I can add 250 - 500 calories a day.  I do want to be cautious so I'd rather be on the lower side (of adding extra calories) when trying this balancing act.

If you want to switch from weight-loss to maintenance you should go about it in stages.  If you start with 1400 cals to lose 1lb a week then increase initially to 1900 the first week.... 2100 the second week.... 2300 the third week.

Don't weigh yourself immediately but give your body a whole week to get accustomed to a little more food.  If your weight goes down, go to the next step.  If your weight goes up a little, wait another week before judging.  If it stays the same, you've probably found the right place.  You have to add the first 500 as a given, however.

If you can't maintain your weight on a reasonable amount of calories (average 1900-2100 for the typical adult female) then it could be that your target weight is actually too low.   Good luck
