Question about muscle mass/strength

This may be really stupid, but.. I'm wondering if muscle mass and strength are actually linear in relationship (?) I ask this because lately I've been losing some weight and I want to be sure that it's fat and not muscle loss.  I have no body fat scale, nor have I ever paid for a body fat test.. I can only estimate my body fat based on online resources (so the accuracy is questionable).  However, I do know that I've been at least able to maintain the same weights during my weight training sessions.. so can I assume that the weight loss is fat?  Or is it possible that I'm also losing muscle but I'm still as "strong" with less muscle mass because somehow they've become more efficient at the exercises.. ??

As for estimating body fat, what can I do to roughly monitor my body fat at home without any special devices?  Right now I'm just trying to take some measurements with the measuring tape.. but even if I get smaller measurements, how can I say for sure that it's a loss of fat and not just muscle? *confused*

alot of people have the same problem ill try and walk ya through it

1. Good to hear your mainting lifting power. but hows your effort level? are you having to put double the effort in too lift the same weights?

2.Make sure you get a decent amount of protein. its easy to run across a protein deficit when dieting and protein will help you maintain that muscle.

3. make sure you keep lifting regulary. lifting alone increases the chance of burning hardly any muscle.

4. take a easy pace. 500 cal deficit and below and this should also help fight muscle loss.

and on the estimating body fat its hard to say. i use tape as a "reference" progress wise. then when i think im close or past my BF goal i go see my doc or i go to my gym (they have infared scaning. only costs 5 bucks) and get the most accurate Bf test they got. and just for the record. no such thing as a stupid question. especialy when it applys to your health :)

Thanks Chris, those are some sensible and reassuring tips.. :)   I do lift regularly, and I don't feel like I'm exerting more effort to lift the same weights.. but I do have "off" days once in a while where I can't seem to push myself to that higher level.  I try to put on more weight gradually but the dumbbells at my gym go up in increments of 5, and depending on the exercise, it can be really hard putting on that extra 5 pounds!  I'm not too obsessed with losing weight and I believe I eat pretty well.. I keep a rough note of my caloric intake and if I lose weight then hey, it's all good with me.. I just want to be sure that I'm not "wasting" my weight training sessions by losing muscle because of excess dieting/exercising or whatever.

And $5 for the body fat test is so cheap!  My friend told me it was $30 to get it done at the gym she works at.
ya off days are nothing to worry about everyone has them. as long as on a general average energy day you feel as good as before than your doing great :) good luck

muscle mass and strength do not necessarily have a linear relationship.  it's possible to gain strength while losing muscle mass.
