Question about True CSX Elliptical

Quote  |  Reply

Has anyone heard of the True CSX Elliptical? This is what I have been using at my new apartment complex, is it a good machine? I went hard on the elliptical for 30 minutes yet it said I only burned 200 calories, when the one at my old apartment complex, which was a different brand said I could burn about 350 in a half hour. What would be the difference, is it not as good for workouts?

There is no standard method to calculating calories for elliptical trainers. Since each machine has a different movement design, they have to come up with their own calculations and do their own research. As humans, we seem to be wired to put a lot of faith in number displays, but the calorie counts on ellipticals--especially from second and third tier manufacturers--are probably the least reliable of any fitness machines.

I don't know how much research Ture puts into their calorie calculations, so it is impossible to determine which of the two examples you cite is the most "accurate".  However, I can say with reasonable certainty that if you are working out at a similar level of exertion on two different ellipticals, your calorie burn is also similar, regardless of the difference in displayed numbers.
