Question about weight vs. size

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 18, 5'5" and weigh 228 lbs. According to BMI charts, I am severely obese. I wear a size 16-18 (US). When I weighed 180 lbs, I wore a size 12-14. I'm just wondering if anyone else close to my height/weight is of a similar size?

When I started here at 245lbs I was literally busting out of my 20W's.

Now, I'm 195 and wearing 16's (no "W").

I'm 26, 5'7".

Hope that helps a bit.

when i was 175-180 i was struggling in my size 12 jeans

When I was at about 180 and 5'4" I struggled to fit into my size 14 jeans.  The 16s were comfortable.   Now, at 155ish, the size 10s are snug, and the 12s are comfortable -- even a bit loose at the end of the day.

Four years ago, when I weighed around 170-175, I could squeeze into a 12, but really needed a 14.  Since then, sizing has changed drastically!  Not sure what those would equal now.

I'm 5'7", 180 and a size 10 or 12 (mostly 12), I have no hips but a big bum, it's all semantics (and spandex!) haha

I am 5'5", currently 178 and wear a 12-14.  When I was a very flabby, out of shape 205, I wore 18-20.  I have been working out a lot for the past year as I lost weight, so I would say that you and I are very similar in size, but you are in better shape than I was when I was over 200 .bs.

Sizes are SOOOOO confusing!  I don't understand why women can't be like men and buy their clothes according to measurements!  I understand vanity, but I personally hate trying on four different sizes until I find one that fits.  Anyway, yeah, I don't have any insight on your actual question but I've been fed up with sizing since I was like 13.  :P

AMEN! SISTAH!!!!!  Roflmao!  I used to hate it too.  But it just depends on the manufacturer.  For some reason, not all clothing manufacturer's have the same patterns. That would just make life too easy. :)

cjeka said it right, no two manufactures have the same size which makes it really difficult to tell people what size i wear at the moment. I'm about 5'3, currently weigh 185 (from 220); i wear XL in tops. In some stores i'm comfy, in other stores its like second skin! It all depends on wear you go.

I think measurements would be more helpful in this case.  I am 5'3" and when my weight was in the 230's my waist was 40 inches & my hips were 48 and I remember looking at size 18 and some of those were too snug ( this was 7 years ago).  Now I weigh 170 and my waist is 32, my hips are 41&1/2.  Most of the 14's in my closet are too loose, but a couple are just right and 1 is still snug.

that is exactly why i love the jeans at The Buckle, they are in measurments and not sizes..... if you're a 32 in waist, then that's it your a 32 in waist!!!!

I agree that weight and sizes don't really correspond.  I've weighed as much as 200 lbs and wore size 18s I lost 55 lbs got to a size 8 then I gained some weight after I quit smoking and popped back up to a 14 but then I started lifting weights gained more weight but fit into a 12's and 10's (depending on the brand) with little problems so don't let weight be your measure - but actually use your measurements.

How about this:

I am 5'9" and 145.5, and I'm a size 10!

When I weighed 136 last year I was a size 8...

Weight and size are so individual. I do have a small frame - my fingers overlap an inch on the wrist test.

Sigh.

Clothing size, weight, BMI and how you actually look have come to mean very different things for me.  At my biggest, I weighed 253lb, had a BMI of 41.2 and wore size 14-16 American.  I am now 182lb, BMI of 29 and wear a size 8 American.

In the end, you just have to go with how you look.  When I tell people that I have to lose another 40lb to take me to a healthy BMI of under 25, they are horrified.  To tell the truth, I am not sure where the weight will go from.  I am almost ready to ditch the scales, and just go by how I feel.  Once I whittle down my tummy a little more, I think I will just stay there.  Even when I was at my heaviest, no one would ever guess just how much I did weigh, not even close.  Maybe my bones are made from lead, :).

Anyway, I am trying not to worry about what other people's numbers are, and just go with how I look and feel.  That is the most important thing.

BTW I am 5f 6in.
