so the bare minimum is 1200.  If I go to the gym and burn 500 calories, is the minimum bumped up to 1700 so my body has enough to work with?  Or is it okay to be below the 1700?

...I knew this answer at one point I just got confused trying to sort it all out today :-)

anyone?  I'm impatient haha
I think we're all scratching our heads and thinking before we respond.

*scratches head*
*thinks*

I want to say yes...but I want to say no.

I typed out a whole paragraph and erased it because I'm confusing myself. Hahahaha.
depends on your size hon... the answer is no...
I'm 5'9 around 130 and my burn for sedentary is 1700....if that matters
um.  I know i've heard this question before...uhh...search the forums?  I think if your really short (like i am *pouts*) it's somewhat ok, but i don't want to say anything.  erm.  Lets wait for some more knowledgeable people.

*waits*
the bare minimum is 1200, but it's okay to go under 1,700, but only as long as you don't have a deficient over 1,000 (2lbs a week). Does that make sense? Basically as long as you're over 1,200 and have a deficient 1,000 or less you're set :)

take care
"Deficit". Sorry. Hahaha.

But yeah, that seems to make the most sense. I don't think your bare minimum goes up, since the bare minimum refers ONLY to your organ functions. BUT, it will increase your deficit. So if you're wondering if you'll go into starvation mode if you eat under 1700 calories on those days, the answer is no.

That's what I'm stickin' to. :D
jeez, lizzle, you tell other people when they spell it wrong.... couldn't tell me though, could ya? ;)
thanks guys!
I thought it would crush your little mouse heart if I were to get on your case, tina! And I wouldn't want to do that!

Hi. I'm a new member. No less than 1200? This is troubling me somewhat. Before I started my calorie-counting regime (yesterday), I calculated an average calorie intake for my normal eating pattern and it was already low – around 1200 to 1500 per day. I've always had a weight problem, so I know what not to eat and I am strict with myself – never any sugar, always low fat, high fibre, small meals, no between-meal snacks, etc. On this average intake my already excessive weight was gradually increasing. I spoke to my doctor about this, but he clearly didn't believe me or my husband when we told him I don't eat much. The only advice I got was "you'll just have to eat even less"! I cut down yesterday and ended up eating less than 800 calories. Is this dangerous? Is it more dangerous than being obese? I am simultaneously increasing my daily exercise routine, but don't want to end up making myself sick. What's the answer?

If you're 5'9" and 130 you are underweight.  So the answer is, you need to eat more, especially if you go to the gym and burn 500 calories.

BMR/RMR Calculator

The above is a link to a calculator that helps figure up how much you need to eat and burn to lose/maintain/gain weight The advanced button is where you click on which you want to accomplish

At the weight you are it says that you are a good weight BMI is 19.2 lower end of Normal is 18.5 and high end is 25

At Sedentary the recommendation for maintaining is eat 1699 Calories

Lightly active which is around 248 Calories burned in exercise a day is 1947 calories to mantain

Moderate Activity the amount closest to your 500 calorie gym burn of 496 says eat 2195 calories so your way under.

If you want to gain some weight and tone up a bit instead of just maintaining at that amount of exercise than you would eat 2945 and than burn 500 calories at the gym making sure to get in your protein so you can build muscle.

One more thing it says your ideal weight is 149.6 and the ideal range is 125.4 167.2 so you should be great at anywhere in that range.  So either maintain and try to make sure you get all your nutrients in or gain a bit and tone up good luck :)
