Quick Question

Quote  |  Reply

ok, using the tools on this forum it says i burn 1900 calories at a sedentary level each day, so i use that, then i add my calories burned exercising, which i walk on the treadmill everyday

4.3 MPH, 10% grade incline, for 80 minutes with a 3-5 minute cool down, it says i burn about 812 calories, in the treadmill i can input my weight which i do, but not age or gender, so i round it down to about 600 calories burned exercising (does that sound right?) so does that mean i burn 2500 calories each day? so to loose weight i could eat 2000 calories a day or 14000 in 1 week, and to maintain my weight i could eat 2500 calories a day or 17500 calories a week?

am i doing the math right?

i appreciate your answers, its been bugging me for some time, and i wanted to get it clear so i knew what i should be working with,

thanks for the replies

Yes, you've got it.

And I tend to under-report calories I burn on machines too, just in case.

If it turns out that you are losing weight faster than you expected to, it could mean that the machine is right about the 812 calories.

Edit: in fact with 80 minutes of treadmill per day you might want to bump yourself up to at least "light exercise" soon.

Redo the calculations setting your activity level to 'moderate'.  'Light' would be half an hour of something fairly gentle every day.   80 minutes a day is more then 'light'.

If you exercise every day you burn more calories when your body is at rest than if you're sedentary.  So 'sedentary + exercise' isn't giving you the true picture.

So if this person switches to moderate activity, do they still add their exercise?  I am in the same line of questioning.  I had my activity level at sedentary and was adding my exercises throughout the day.  I was told I wasn't eating enough because I was burning 300-600 calories extra a day and was eating 1300-1500 calories a day.  I figured I was fine, but was told I was in starvation mode or soon to be.

if you switch to moderate you wouldn't add activity.  i find it easier myself to stay at edentary and add as i go.  so on days i exercise elss, i still know how much i should eat/i overeat way less.  but to each their own.  just find something that works for you.  lots of options=great for everyone! :)

thanks to you all mates, i just wanted to make sure i got the math right, i'll keep it how it is and just add my exercise as i go, i know i shouldn't eat under 1500,

Cheers Mate

For arags.....  Weight-control is about finding balance, comfortable averages and getting into a healthy way of life that you can see yourself living with long-term.  If you think 'moderate' accurately reflects your level of activity, use 'moderate' and then go with that as a steady average - and you don't add on exercise on top.   You're then able to get into a good routine which, in turn, becomes a good habit.  If on occasions you do a lot of extra exercise and you feel a little hungrier as a result, you eat a little more without obsessing about exactly how much

By contrast, a big downside about the 'registering as sedentary and adding every movement' is that it has someone keep popping back to their activity log and adding a bit here and a bit there.  And this then leads to the 'I can have an extra 200 cal snack today' or 'I have to eat 300 cals less than normal'....  And all that jumping around doing the maths and eating to the numbers makes it more difficult to get into a regular, good eating habit.   Take the CC calculator away from somene like that and they quickly get lost.

Just my take...
