I'm so sick of being a smoker, all that smoking is PREVENTING me from eating right or losing weight...I've been unconciously skipping meals and drinking lots of coffee and sugary drinks instead...I've been smoking for 3 years now, and i tried to quit twice for 2-3 months (when i wasn't smoking, i could exercise so much better, my skin was much clearer, my eye bags were gone, and i lost weight because i was able to exercise and i wasnt drinking 4-5 cups of sugary coffee like when i'm smoking)...i got back to smoking due to depression, family probs and etc. I want to exercise without all that coughing!! I want to be able to eat normal meals..I just don't feel like eating when i'm smoking but i always go for sugary stuff which is horrid!
So for three days starting from today I'm detoxifying myself from all that nicotine and I'll be consuming as much fruits and veges and drinking as much water as I can...my main aim (atleast for this week) is not to lose weight but to start building on a heatlhier smoke free me, and to start exercising again without feeling like I'm suffocating! Once i've taken care of this, then I shall proceed with a sound and healthy weight loss plan.
I'll keep posting on this thread within the next three days to one week to keep track of myself.
Wish me Luck!

My hubby does, and I see his HEALTH and the MONEY it costs US as a family. a caryon a week. $30.00 a week.... $120.00 a month.... When My parents quit, they took that money and put it in a jar..... You would never believe how much that will add up too, and go on a vacation, do something nice for YOU!

You know what, I am SOOOOOO with you.
I have my gum... which does have a little nicotene in it to stop me feeling like I'm going to rip off somebodies head.
But, I have a sore throat and everytime I have a ciggie I feel like it's burning the back of my throat. So I'm not going to have one!!!!!

Good luck!!! I quit in 2005 and I was successful because I had a made-up mind. I WANTED to quit with my whole heart so I wasn't going to take failure. I promised myself that if I ever was successful, I would never ever smoke another one again, and I haven't, because I know that if I did I would be addicted all over again. You can do it!
thnx u guys!
mandy, good 4 u! i'll be where u're at soon hopefully!
sometimes it gets really hard esp with problems around me and stuff, but i don't want to sacrifice myself for all that anymore! and i definately would luv to be able to sve all that $$ instead!
and lozzle, yea, i wish i could have a sore throat right now, it would make it easier to quit cos then i wouldnt be craving those darn things! lol...i get angry alot when i'm not smoking...maybe i should just go out n do lotsa window shopping by myself to fix that...also ALL my friends smoke, even my sis...which sucks cos that makes it that much harder :/

I know where you are with EVERYBODY smoking. ALL my family smoke, every single member. but As I'm typing this and coughing my guts up, I just don't want to keep on doing it.
I want to be able to start my workouts and feel like I can give more than 50% because if I do anymore than that now I feel like I'll collapse on the floor!
It's hard though, I've never quit before BUT my boyfriend doesn't smoke, and when I'm around him, I don't smoke as much. When I stay at his house I don't smoke at all.
I've gone two/three days without a ciggie, and if I can do that then I KNOW I can do this, and so can you!!!

There are lots of people here on CC who have stopped smoking and lost weight too. It can be done! It's not going to be easy, but we're here when you need us.
Good luck!
Good luck! About six years ago I made exactly the same decision and have never looked back. I'm about 25 pounds lighter, fitter, stronger, and much happier than I ever was as a smoker. The best piece of advice I can give you is to think about good habits you want to establish and use those habits to replace smoking in your life. I used exercise ... went for walks, lifted weights, swam, biked, all instead of smoking. It can be done, and it'll be the best decision of your whole life!
Good for you! I wish you all the best with this!
I started smoking like an idiot at a really young age because all my cool, older friends did, and I quit and restarted at least 8 times--once for like 3 years---and now I've been smoke free a year. It is totally worth it!!!! It is hard--I almost died (last summer of undiagnosed appendicitis--not of smoking), so my quitting was, at first, unwilling, but when my awesome bf said he'd quit with me, I was stoked. ( : You already did one of the hardest parts---deciding you are really done smoking and I'm proud of you!
Make yourself a list of rewards (like you maybe do for weight loss goals?). I kept track of how much money I was saving by not smoking in only a few months had enough money for all new couches in the living room! And go work out when you want to smoke---it made me REALLY remember why I needed to quit in the first place.
Prayers and positive vibes! ( :
PS: As stupid as it sounds, the thing that helped me the most when I was really having a nic fit in the beginning? really, really slow, deep breathing. It feels retarded at first, but in the reading on quitting I had done, I read that the main reason you feel calmer or less stressed after smoking is not the nicotine since that;s actually a stimulant. What makes you feel better are the long periods of inhalation and exhalation----it is physically impossible not to feel calmer if you breath deeply--just thought I'd share. It saved my bf from strangling a few times =P lol

Oh quitting smoking is the WORST!!!
Our recent crisis got me puffing away again - and it was only after my hubby asked me to stop, that I put away the sin sticks. Clean since May...phew.
For me, working out helped, though I become quite a snack monster for a while. I think one of the things that made me stop was the smell of it - what clings to clothes and hair, long after the ciggie has been tossed away.
Oh...and I must say - the savings from not smoking can add up to a nice treat - say makeup or a good book or a cute pair of shoes!

After smoking for 33 years, I quit smoking on March 14, 2007. I just bought a new wardrobe: $614.00 Cdn and still had $400 left in the savings account - all being money NOT spent on smokes.
After 3 days, there is no nicotine left in your system. From then on, it's just your head playing with you. Don't listen. Just tell yourself that you are a non-smoker. Never believe that you are a smoker trying to quit - it won't work.
Good Luck!

That is a wonderful plan!!! Stick to it! When my mom quit smoking she was finally successful in losing the weight she'd been trying to lose for months...she was on a low carb, low fat diet and it just wasn't working until she finally quit smoking and replaced that bad habit with a new activity of exercising for an hour a day (it helped her releave stress as well). I wish you luck :)
I wish I could quit.
Best of luck to you! :)
Best of luck to you! :)
Congrats!! I quit about 3 months ago. It's the best decision you can make for your health. I have quit before and gained 30 lbs. This time the goal was to quit and not gain enormous amounts of weight. I began many months ago by entering and completing a fitness and nutrition course. That information has been incredibly helpful. However, I have gain 5 lbs since quiting smoking. I have been tracking my diet for months and everytime that I fall of the wagon, it is PMS related. Not cigarettes. I have an awful time controlling junk food cravings. In fact, I don't control them. They control me! I will do a great job of living a healthier lifestyle for three weeks a month and then BOOM......the week before THE week. I eat nothing but junk food and can't seem to stop myself! It's completely out of control.
Does anyone have the same issues? I really need help with this. It completely derails me every month.

heh best wishes and we know you can do it l myself was a pack a day smoker and when l quit l would eat and being in front of my comp doesn't help so l started going to the Y and swimming and their membership prices are great for people on disability anyways l started 9 days ago since my diet alone wasn't working and l was so disgusted with myself l hated me and remembered l had to love me to make me feel better and look better,so yesterday l came home and didn't feel like going but went and then when l got home l weighed myself and here l was back to the same weight l started so of course being alone l started to cheat and ate and this made me sick and l felt miserable all night but not before l gave myself a good talking to and l was not going to quit smoking or getting healthy and excercising and when l woke up l felt ok but went to the gym and my new friends were there and encouraged me and l talked about almost giving up and now l see this article and l went to my email and Joel Osteen had a message about not giving up wow now that made my day and l will succeed and so will you let me know how good it is for you today and the next few days...........your new friend
Well...today is okay so far. Yesterday I did really well with the diet and exercise and of course, this morning the scale is down. Good news! It's amazing what just one good day will do! How's your day?
good luck! i quit over 10 months ago... wow! never in my 15 years of smoking did i think i could go this long. and the longer it goes, the easier it gets. but i think it's important to realize something... quitting smoking is not an easy thing, but i think we make it much harder than it needs to be. with all the fear and uncertainty of quitting, we give so much of our power away, to the tobacco industry, to the cigarettes themselves. we hype ourselves up for the worst possible time ever, but once you have all the tools you need and truely want to quit, you realize it's not the end of the world... but the beginning! try not to make it harder than it actually is. just ignore those annoying cravings, and they won't have any power over you.
i've gained 15 pounds since, which is why i'm here to begin with. i gave into all my junk food cravings because i wanted to do whatever it took to quit. now i wish i was at least going to the gym the whole time, it's so hard to lose this weight! better late than never.
hang in there, you'll feel amazing in no time!!!

oh, one more thing... be careful of nic gum, can also be very addictive. i got addicted to it when i quit a few times ago. i eventually started smoking again, and found myself chewing it any time i couldn't have a cig! this went on for a couple years! Nic gum is a good tool, as long as it's done right...
for any smokers in Ontario Canada who want to quit using the nicotine patch or gum, there is a study being sponsored by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) that will allow you to get 5 weeks supply for FREE. It is a community pharmacy based approach and requires you to meet with a trained pharmacist in your community ( once or three times depending on which study group you are assigned to) who will assess your need and supply an appropriate dose. Get more information here . You must be 18 to participate and will fill out an online registration form that provides you with a voucher number. Participating pharmacies are listed, but if there is none in your area there is a way to participate by mail as well.
