I quit smoking and now I am always hungry. Is that normal?

I noticed that before I quit smoking, I didn't have an appetite quite like I do now.  Maybe it’s psychosomatic, but I have gained 40 pounds in 11 months (obviously not good),  I read that smoking suppresses your appetite and increases your metabolism and when you quit, your metabolism drops.  Well at this rate, I am going to be in big trouble.  Do need to go back to smoking?

Nicotine does increase energy expenditure, and, when you quit smoking, metabolic changes account for a 5 to 10 lb weight gain.  But any additional gain comes from eating more food. Food tastes and smells better, smoking no longer suppresses the appetite, and, more importantly, food is often substituted for a cigarette.  To reverse weight gain, drink water or eat high fiber vegetables whenever you get the urge to ,and take up aerobic exercise to burn more calories.  Any exercise that increases your respiration and heart rate will make you glad you no longer smoke.
