Wow! I quit smoking too but I lost weight (I was on a health binge and I dropped hella weight).
What I did was replace my ciggy's with veggies. Everytime I wanted a cig I ate a veggie (celery, carrot, etc) each time. By the end of the week I was pretty disgusted by smokes and I think I lost like 10lbs bc I was never hungry... lol. (maybe I should take that up for this remaining 10lbs eh?). lol.
But seriously you ROCK for quitting, and I totally would give you a huge high five for it if you were telling me in person so even if you kept the 10lbs extra I think you're body will love you for it! ![]()
New here - just joined today.
I quit the habit just short of a month ago. Went on the patch for the first 2 weeks then stopped the patch - gained 8 pounds in just over a week. Got depressed and went back on the patch. Back in 2001, I started my own type of diet (1500 cal a day / 1 hour walk 5 days a week) which enabled me to go from 217lbs down to 155lbs. I have managed to stay between 160 and 170 since my initial weight loss and never looked back at ever being heavy again. Now that I'm working on the smoke, I'm up to 180 and I'm very depressed that I gained that much in such a short amount of time. I started my 2nd diet yesterday at 180lbs - my goal is to get back down to 160. Here are my stats;

Way to Go littlemalynda that is great that you lost weight when you quit that is one of the side effects that most people start back smoking is the weight gain High Five back at you
Artman keep up the good work you can kick this nasty habit and the weight will come off and your heart and body will be so much healthier, don't let the weight gain make you start again it really isn't worth it get out there and walk and you will be fine live a smoke free life it is great.............Keep up the Good Work

Hi,
I haven't actually quit smoking but I really would like to!! It's a gross habit and it interfers with my running - I really want to be a good runner.
littlemalynda - what a great idea to subsitute ciggs with veggies. Part of the reason I haven't quit is because I am afraid of weight gain. I am going to try your technique.
Congrats to everyone that has quit smoking!

Hi,
I quit smoking in Jan 2007. Weighed 140 then. Now weight 169, but have stayed off the cigs.
Feel rubbish about the weight gain but can walk up hills without getting out of puff! Am finding it hard to lose the weight, as I hadn't realised how much I used cigs to kill my appetite.
Am hoping this site will help to motivate me to lose the weight :-)
Hows everyone doing with not smoking and losing weight I am now down 3.5 pounds and the inches are melting away from my body my clothes are fitting nicely ................and all without smoking............what a great feeling
I'm down 3.2lbs from the start - no smoke for 1month 4days and 2hours =)
My husband used to smoke and when quit for the last time, he also quit drinking sodas and temporarily quit Taco Bell. He lost a lot of weight. He wasn't doing it for weight loss either. It was just his way of defeating the oral habit and to help his blood pressure.
I'm on raw carrots (approx 2/day) cut into 3" long 1/4 inch strips for the "oral habit" =)
I quit smoking on January 25, 2008. It has been 131 days of no smoking for me! I am not real sure of my weight before but now it is about 184 lbs. I believe I have gained about 16lbs. I am very frustrated about the weight but I am so glad that I can breath! I am having a harder time with my weight. I have changed my eating habits ~ and cut down to 1 soda (Mt. Dew) a day (from about 4-5). I do go for 30 min walks with my son 4 times a week. We also share the mowing the lawn. We also just put in a bike ride too. Work diffrent muscles. I am just not loosing any weight. I would like to loose about 30lbs total. I just cant believe I havent lost weight now. Sorry just dont understand why.
This week I'm down 5.4lbs from the start - still no smoke (1month, 1week, 3days)....
Keep goin' keep goin!!!
Don't give up, and if you slip up trust me you'll regret it! One of the times I slipped up, I couldn't get past two drags before I looked at it... licked my lips, and thought, "gross"
Maybe actually it helped me to not want it anymore. *shrug*
Either way, kick the habit! Save the Dough! There is a million reasons to stay healthy and not a single excuse to put toxins into your body! So keep it up & I commend all of you because it's not easy!!
Way to go team!! ![]()
hey, i'm really excited about this thread.
i've been quitting smoking for just under a year now,
i stopped buying smokes in august of 07, then really actually quit on january 7th 08. how ever recently i turned 21 and smoked about 12 cigarettes during the celebratory week. i'm at a place where i could go back to smoking and i know thats the last thing i want.
when i was quitting i used exercise as a replacement tool, did anyone else do this? it was great i was losing weight and feeling huge improvements in my lung capacity, but once i crossed over the 2ish month point i stopped craving smokes and stopped going to the gym.....so the weight gain started creeping in. ugh, any way before quitting i was about 150 now i'm 164 my goal is 145 my pre-smoking weight when i was my healthiest! i'm 5'9 or 10.
right now my best motivation is a mantra of sorts that i repeat when i have a craving for either food or smoke or watching a movie in lew of the gym
basicly i remind myself that i started smoking because its kindda sexy and there is nothing sexy about a fat smoker, so its better to be a fat non-smoker who's working on improvement than a fat smoker who is just killing yourself a little more each day and still gaining weight.
right?
congrats on all you quitters! it's been about a week since my last drunken drag but i'm not craving em, just sometimes thinking of them fondly. grose.
Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done, and I did it! I know that if I could do that, I can do anything. It's just a matter of motivation. What do I really want the most? Do I want to look good and be healthy, or do I want a cupcake?
Losing weight is so much more complicated than quitting smoking. You HAVE to eat, where as you can just stop smoking all together. So now we have to learn to moderate. I think moderation is much harder than quitting something since the temptation is always around you, and you cannot avoid it.
I started on CC over 2 years ago and have been on and off and on again with my weight loss. I'm in a slump right now, though not gaining, I'm just maintaining. The good news is, if I continue this cycle of losing - maintaining - losing - maintaining... I will eventually reach my goal, however painfully slowly it comes.
I always fall off track when money is tight. I just can't afford a lot of healthy and convenient foods that make losing weight easy. It's not impossible to lose weight on a tight budget, it's just a lot more work.
Anyway, I feel soo much better fat than I did as a thin smoker! I can exercise, walk, jog even without feeling like my lungs are going to implode. It's great! And no more smoker's cough. It's really fantastic being smoke-free.
when i first started going to the gym i was still smoking and i would go to spinning classes and practically die from coughing it was so embaressing.
today i jogged two miles straight on the treadmill without having to stop from unbearable chest pains for the first time ever! i'm so proud.
how's everyone elses lungs?
Way to Go Everyone
Its nice to see the responses from everyone it sure is great to be smoke free it has been 17 weeks for me and I went to see my doctor for my smoke free check up and I ROCK not only have I stayed smoke free and in all honesty don't even crave it at all I have lost 7 pounds of my weight gain but have lost around 3 inches and my body is so toned and all my clothes fit better then when I weight less my doctor was so impressed he said my complexion and whole look is healthy looking.
He told me I have beat the odds and the rest is easy sailing .
One thing I did is make a contract up between me and my doctor stating that if I started smoking again I would owe him 500.00 to go to a charity of his chose ..........but not going to happen...lol never going back to that stinky habit again
NEVER GIVE UP ONE DAY AT A TIME LIVE SMOKE FREE AND HEALTHY
