Hi fellow runners!
I'm interested to know what races everyone is running this year. I'll be doing the Indianapolis Mini Marathon in May, and the Marine Corps Marathon in November if all goes well.
I ran my first 1/2 marathon of the year on April 18, in 2:08:34, which I feel really goos about since I "took it easy." I have my first full marathon May 9, I'm hopeing for a 4:30:00 or better.
cfeltontufty,
That's so great! Congratulations, wow you are fast. I also ran my first 1/2 marathon same weekend as yours, only mine was Sunday, April 19. I finished it in 2 hours 43 minutes - I could have done it better, maybe 2.30 but I hurt both my knees from the first down hill (mile 4), I guess I went too fast going down and by mile 9, both the sides of my knees where in pain, I had to stop a few times to stretch it then run again. The course had like 3 hills and at least 4 rolling hills, after my knees started to hurt, I had to walk going down the hills because it felt like my knees where going to collapse. I'm still pretty happy on my time because my goal was 2.45 and I did it in 2.43 with painful knees in the last 5 miles.
My first full marathon will be in October, the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, I'm thinking I better train really good on hills because the course has a lot of hills which is not surprising because its San Francisco.
Good luck to you on your full marathon in May, that's less than 2 weeks away, let me know how it feels after finishing the full marathon...so I know what to expect when I do mine.
I wish you all the best!
Dorothy
nicely done, cfelton and dot! :) Impressive finishes all around.
I'm out again with knee pain for a bit, hoping to start back up next week and aiming for that half in November. Hoping for a 2:15 or better. We'll see how training progresses. :)
thank you kellybee - sometimes it takes a lot longer to recover those knee pains, I was lucky that my knee pain went away by Saturday, I totally rested my knees the whole week after the half marathon because I had another short race the following Saturday(4/25) and my knees were pain free by then. But last year, I remember having knee pain that lasted longer than I wanted it to be, also I think because I was still running even with knee pain so just that I don't miss my runs but in the end it was a bad idea because the recovery took a lot longer than I wanted to...2months - so rest your knees really good before you go back to your training. I learned my lesson the hard way ;) besides you still have plenty of time to train since your marathon is not until November. Good luck and I wish you all the best!!!
Great job on all those great marathon runs! I just ran my first 10K on Sunday in 54'08". I was pretty pleased with my time as it was only just a hair slower than my last 5K pace back in November. I have my first half at the end of June so we'll see how that goes.
rasmom~ awesome job on that 10k. 10k is a hard race, I ran one last July and I did it in just over an hour. I plan on running the same 10k again this year, hopefully I can do better.
dot~ marathons are a lot harder then half's and way more of a mental race, the last 4-6 miles is all about mind of matter. Granted last year when I ran my first full I really struggled and had to walk the last 4 miles of it. Make sure you train well and hit at least 2-3 18 mile runs and 1-2 20-22 mile runs. I use the training plan thru runners world and it has really helped me this season.
Good luck to everyone, Run hard and don't forget to have fun!!!
Thanks cfelton for the congrats. I like your marathon advice. I keep thinking about running a marathon in the back of my mind. Right now, I'm going to run the half and see how it goes and see if I'm up to the training required to run a marathon. I'd really like to be able to say I've done it.
Hi,
I follow my husband (veteran marathoner / ultramarathoner) - start out really slow - you can always speed up your pace but if you bonk then it is just miserable.
I have run 22 miles in training and for me it is about hydration and nourishment - every hour I make sure I take in 100 calories and at least 1/2 bottle of water. I generally eat those jelly belly beans with electrolytes or the gel cubes.
Anyways - congrats. Also, knee pain is no fun!
rasmom, great job on that 10K. 10K may not be a long as half marathon but it's no joke, that's half of the half marathon already. They said if you can run 10K, you can definitely run a half marathon.
cfelton, thanks for the heads up on the full marathon - I really want to be super prepared for it, not just physically but also mentally. If I lose my last 10 lbs before my full marathon, I know I'll be running better. Also, I just found out that there is a nike club here in my area that helps and coaches in training for a full marathon for free as long as I'm registered to run the Nike Women's marathon. I'm joining them when they start their training at the end of June.
I am so looking forward to it.
Way to go everyone!! :) I am so very jealous. I have missed 2 races I intended to run so far because of the knee. There is a 5k on the 23rd of this month I am hoping i will be OK to run. Get back into the swing. I've given it almost 3 weeks of just yoga and rest....I'm itching to hit the road again, though!
I am so excited! I have been asked to run on the North Face Relay Team at the Canadian Death Race. It is a 125 km trail run in northern Alberta. There are five legs from 19km to 38km. I am not sure which leg I will be running but I am so pleased that they invited me to be on their team. The race is in the beginning of August so I have something to look forward to after my marathon.
I find I start to feel a little down a couple weeks after running a marathon, I think it is because after spending all that time working towards a goal and then it is all over and I feel a bit lost. Is this common? I always need to find a new goal to work towards so that I don't get in a slump.
Congrats embracing50! It sounds like it's a real honor to be a part of that team. Good for you. I've only been running and racing for a short time but I also find that as soon as I finish one race, I'm making plans for the next. It helps to keep me motivated, focused and moving forward. Lots of luck on your race!
That's how I felt too after my half marathon. I need something to look forward to so I continued to stay motivated. Although I don't have any more races lined up until October, I am trying to focus on my training since I will be running a full marathon in October. I figure I need this much time to train for it.
dot~WTG, you look like a rock star. You will do great in Oct for your full, you have plenty of training time.
Ah! you made my day by telling me I look like a rock star!! Whohoo!!! Thank you for the compliments
- you know sometimes I feel so confident about my upcoming marathon yet sometimes I'm freaking out inside because I'm kind of getting scared that time will fly by so fast, it'll be here before I know it - then I'm short on time in training....I guess that would be a normal feeling. I was motivated by the contestants of the biggest loser tv show, some of them ran a full marathon on this week's episode - so I'm telling myself, if they can do it, so can I. Thank you again for the encouragement, I sure do need it.
I watched the Biggest loser too Dot. Totally made me want to run a full instead of a half this year. :) Watching how excited they were to finish and what an accomplishment it is. I can't wait until I get there. Slowly but surely, right? :) Chug out the miles. It will all come down to how well my training goes in the next couple of months I guess and how well my knee does.
You will make it, I'm sure of it. ;)
kellybee322 - I know how easy it is to get temped..to run a full marathon but it is a good idea to run half first, remember the biggest loser contestants who ran the full marathon did ran a half marathon first. Stick to your plan no matter how tempting it is. I'm glad I've done my half marathon first, it gives me more confidence that if I can do the half, I can do the full. Take care of those knees during training - do whatever to prevent it from injury - shoes, stretches, running style...anything.
I'm so glad we can encourage each other here. Thanks.
dot, I know I need to take it easy and go the half. I am sticking to the plan, actually registered for it today. All signed up and paid for to run the half right after Thanksgiving. :) I will do a full in 2010. I have a really awesome training buddy to keep me on track too.
also, in my time off, I must say that I have gained a much deeper appreciation of yoga than I had before. I am going to give a short easy run a try tomorrow (been 5 weeks off) but will do some yoga beforehand to make sure my hips are all stretched out and loose and everything is warmed up and limber before I go. Seems to REALLY cut down on the snap crackle pops in the knee and just makes me feel stronger all around. :)
I agree. The encouragement is great. Helps a ton with staying focused and motivated and on track. :)
Kelly~ I totally agree, train for a half first. I jump straight into a full and had a heck of a time getting across the finish line last year. I ended up with injuries and all sorts of problems. But this year I just had some sore muscles to deal with.
I'm so excited, I ran my marathon on saturday in 4:29:09, that's a PR by almost 50 minutes!!! I could not have done it without the pacer, he kept talking to me the last 2-3 miles and kept me pushing through everything. I've already started to put my plan together for my full marathon I'm running in Oct. I'm thinking I can do that in 4:15:00, I'm going to have to train smart to do it. Twin Cities here I come!!! granted I will have a half and a couple other shorter races before that.
