Racing heart after eating
I've noticed that since increasing my food intake over the last couple of weeks, my heart has felt like it has been racing after eating.
It feels like little bursts of adrenaline. I'm not anxious so I'm pretty sure it's not down to that. My heart rate speeds up and I feel like I have to catch my breath. I'm just concerned I'm eating more than my body can process and it's putting stress on it (it feels a bit like when you need to vomit and your heart starts pounding).
Anyone had similar experiences?
This happens to me too. I try not to eat heavy amounts of food per sitting-also I had my electrolytes checked and ecocardiogram. Refeeding can be dangerous if you are recovering from an eating disorder.I started out slowly with increases.
Yes. I went to the doctor who didn't explain anything at all, so I did my own research.
When you eat a signifigant amount more than you normally do at one sitting, your body releases a ton of insulin to get rid of the excess energy. It's like when kids get too much candy. I had my heart beat taken mid-attack, and it was up to 130 bpm. Your body is burning off the calories, making your body work harder.
I exercised to bring my heart rate up naturally after this started. Once you do some cardio, it will go away.
I don't know if this is true, just a guess, but your body uses energy to digest food. Using energy = exertion = increase of heart rate. Another thing you might notice after you eat is you get chills or feel colder, because the blood rushes to your stomach to aid the digestion, so the extremities may feel colder. Fun fact. But if your heart rate is alarmingly high (probably 120+) you may want to contact your doctor.
I have the same problem, and my doctor did explain it. When you eat your stomach expands, which pushes your diaphragm up on that side. This constricts both your heart and lungs. You cannot take as deep of a breath, so you feel short of breath. Your heart cannot expand, so you pump out less blood per heart beat. Since your body still needs an adequate blood supply, your heart is forced to pump more often to make up the difference. I find my legs become weak from a decrease in blood flow after I eat. He recommended eating smaller meals and the problem will resolve itself. It is called Diastolic Syndrome.
