Raisin Bran: Are you supposed to eat the raisins?

Quote  |  Reply
Like, seriously?  Alex bought me cereal yesterday, and it's Raisin Bran.  Are you supposed to eat the raisins or are they just in there to flavour the little flakes and are meant to be picked out?

Um... I've always eaten the raisins...
Its called "Raisin" Bran. So it is Raisin with bran cereal lol.

I think because the bran flakes are so plain and taste like cardboard (to me atleast) the raisins are there to give the flakes some sweetness. I must admit tho, raisins and bran do taste good together :)
if you like them, eat them

raisins are not poisonous

This is an interesting question.  Unless you're concerned with conserving calories, why wouldn't you eat the raisins?  If you're not, why don't you just get plain bran flakes?

I think it was developed with the intent of the raisins being consumed, but you can do whatever you want with them.  However, I can't imagine that picking out the raisins would leave any kind of flavoring on the flakes that could possibly be detected.

the raisins they put in there are sweetened, aren't they? like coated in sugar or something? i just remember them tasting weird. i'd rather just eat bran cereal and add raisins on my own.
roflmao

Edit: pick the bran flakes out and eat the raisins, they are the good part.
I don't think the raisins are sweetened. The kinda collect some of the bran powder stuff on them though.. taht could be what you find tastes funny? I myself, don't care for raisins, but my parents buy bran flakes and raisins seperately so that they can control the amount of raisins in it. (dried fruit = kinda high calories)
I wasn't so concerned with the calories.  I've just never seen raisins and wasn't sure if these were edible or not.

They're kind of scary looking.

Edit to add: I didn't buy the cereal.  Alex bought it for me.  He won't let me eat Lucky Charms anymore 'cause he's sick of never having marshmallows.

You're 20 years old and you've never seen a raisin?

The raisins in raisin bran are sweetened. Normal raisins do not look like the ones in a box of Raisin Bran.

They're just sun-dried grapes.  People are saying that they're sweetened, but that depends on the brand.  Kellogg's are sweetened, but I'm pretty sure Post and Total Raisin Bran are not.  Either way, they're delicious.  Enjoy!

There're a lot of things I haven't seen. O.O;;
Yucky.  This thread made them sound so promising...  :(
Cellu: Do you eat all the marshmellows from the lucky charms cereal???

Maybe, with the Raisin Bran you can eat all the raisins, he will get sick of never getting any raisins and go back to buying Lucky Charms =P
Eat them?  No way.  I line them up on the dining room table and pretend they're little soldiers.  I like to pummel them with my spit ball cannon and watch them all fly around.  I used to use little green army men but I was trying to get some of them to talk, and my torture methods killed them.

Alex can still eat the marshmallows.  Some are a little soggy from the spit bombs but they're still edible.

Where are you getting the idea that they're yucky?  They're great?  My mom used to pul little boxes of raisins in with my lunch for a treat!  Lots of kids munched on them all the time.  Sweet, delicious and natural!

Raisin Bran is one of my mainstays.  I LOOOVE it. Love the fiber in the bran, love the raisins.  I'd take Raisin Bran over a sugary cereal anyday.  I ate it all the time even when I wasn't "dieting"!

I'm with udokier - what have you read in this thread that makes them sound yucky?  Do you have an aversion to dried fruit?

Not that it would be the first time I've come across someone who hated dried fruit, it's just that I've never come across someone who 1) had never seen a raisin and 2) decided they were yucky without trying them first.

I am shocked that you've never seen a raisin. I grew up with them. I can imagine how they would look weird if you have never seen one. But they are yummy, try them! The raisins make the cereal. I can't imagine what a pain it would be to pick every single raisin out of the box.
I did try one.  And it tasted yucky.

I like dried fruit.  I used to make banana and apple chips all the time, but these are creepy and taste pretty much how they look.

I'm going to spend my afternoon picking out the raisins and putting them in a baggie.  Alex can eat them on his own if he wants them that bad.  Or they can be my next set of troops.

LOL - that's the wayit is with foods you never tried as a kid before, sometimes.  My kids LOVE the fermented soybeans, natto.  I find it REVOLTING.  But they have beeneating it since they were tots, so no prob.

Thanks to this thread, I went down and ate a whole cup of Raisin Bran, even though I was supposed to be done for the day, curse you.

Sorry you didn't like them!

Hahahaha.  Want me to mail you all of the raisins?
