Ran my first 5k today :)

Well, on the treadmill...

I just started running about 3 weeks ago, and today I pushed myself! Ran 3.1 miles on the treadmill, babyyy. and then I walked for about 3 minutes and ran .4 more! And I felt GREAT after.

So now that I've accomplished this, should I try a faster pace? And then try going a further distance?

For me personally, I up my speed a little first.  The faster you go, the more you burn.  That said, I started upping my distance so I'd stay on the treadmill for relatively the same length of time overall.

Edit to add:  BTW...CONGRATS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!  I know you must feel great about that achievement. Cool

CONGRATS!!

that is how i started and now i have just done a 10 mile run last weekend looking to do a marathon next year...

I would stick with trying to do 5k more regularly (you will have some days where you cant so it easily and others where you'll do it no probs) then when you feel you can go longer try it and then eventually 5k will be your minimum distance.

Try also doing it outside with a few hills thrown in... I find the fresh air is better

Congrats!!! I've only gotten up to 6 km (3.7 mile) runs. Hope I'll be able to catch up with you soon! How long did it take you?

yay!  good for you ;)

i did my first 5k on september 14.  since then i haven't increased my distance much (i do 6k sometimes), but i'm trying to run more often and have lots of variety.  i REALLY love trail running, but with dodging all those ruts and puddles (the puddles are huge here, and deep.  my dog swims in some of them, and she's not small), it's slow, so when i'm in the woods i don't worry about distance.  instead, i go by time, and i'm up to 45 minutes.  on the road, my best 5k is 28 minutes, but i'm usually around 32-33.

6raham is right: some days it's pretty easy, but be prepared for hard days!  and remember, the important thing isn't how far or how fast, but that you go ;)

thank you so much for all the responses. i have noticed that it's not always easy. it wasn't easy yesterday (the day after my first 5k) so i broke it up yesterday and today into a 2 mile section, walk for 2 minutes, then 1.1 miles. i figure if i run almost everyday and try and do the 5k right through at least once a week i'll improve! pgeorgian- i WISH there was trails nearby! i went hiking in maine, and it was so amazing, you almost forgot that you were physically exerting yourself. but i'm going to try running outside to change it up and stop the treadmill bores. i have to keep up with it! i'm really excited to see how much I can do. feel free to share any accomplishments with me.<3 xo
