random cottage cheese question...

Quote  |  Reply

I've always thought of cottage cheese as a savoury type food, but from reading on the forums here I know a lot of people like to mix cottage cheese in with their fruit.  I tried doing a blend of cottage cheese/fruit in my food processor (suggestion i saw on CC), but when i tried it, it was absolutely disgusting due to the salt in the cottage cheese. I'm just wondering if american cottage cheese doesn't have salt?  Otherwise, how could ANYONE think fruit and cottage cheese taste good together...?! ICK.

i believe american cottage cheese is probably the same as what you're eating. some people prefer to have it with salt and pepper and tomatoes or cucumbers instead. i think it's just personal preference. just as some people like kettle corn or french fries with their milkshakes, the salt and sweet combo really do it for some people...lol

I also find the cottage cheese combined with most fruit disgusting, except for berries (salty-sour works better for some reason, I`ve found), and raisins (they overpower the saltiness magnificently).

So it seems like it definitely has salt in it.  So it is the same as here in the UK.  I thought maybe you had salt free cottage cheese or something... I can imagine it being quite tasty with fruit if it didnt have the salt. Oh well.

I actually buy the no salt added kind, and eat that with berries.  It is MUCH better than the salted kind.

The salted kind I can only eat with acidic fruits like pineapple.

It's a shame that the no salt added is SO hard to find.  I can only get it at 1 grocery store, and a specific brand.

Cottage cheese is normally salted though you can buy it without salt added. It doesn't taste that salty to me... i was surprised when I read the label! I always use it with sweet things and never savoury.

In the Chicago area we have at least 2 brands of no salt low fat cottage cheese.  I top them with savories (peppers, grated strong cheese, etc) and have never tried them with fruit.  I use the no sodium cottage cheese only to keep the sodium content down.

That said, my mother always made salads using canned fruit (usually a peach half or a pineapple ring) topped with normal salted cottage cheese, and a little dab of mayo.  There's green salad, too - an American picnic standby made of cottage cheese, crushed pineapple and green jello.  While the idea of mixing salty cottage cheese with sweet fruit may gag you, it's accepted practice for a lot of people in the US.

I think the saltyness and fruit gose well together. exspecialy apples, and low suger added mixed tropacal fruit.

Suggestion: try cottage cheese with frozen pineapple pieces in it.  It's amazing.

There's a diner by my house back in Jersey that serves a bed of lettuce and then cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes piled high with cottage cheese.  I loved this plate before I even started dieting.  I especially liked it with the honeydew... yummy!  But I'll eat just regular cottage cheese.  I had no idea it was salted. Oops!

I can't find cottage cheese here in Canada with no salt added.. unless it is dry cottage cheese; but the dry stuff doesn't work very good if you want creamy haha

I looooove cottage cheese blended with some vanilla extract, and stevia... and sometimes I use gelatin and let it set so that it is more firm... but the result tastes like cheesecake, and it's totally good for you! Add a little fruit and you got a delicious low cal "dessert", that tastes sinful, but is completely 'clean', natural and full of nutrition!

I find that the non-fat, or low-fat cottage cheese is less salty then the 2% fat kind... because fat tends to "add" flavor to things, if you get a kind with minimal fat it will be much milder.

Thanks for all these replies guys.

I've never seen no salt cottage cheese here unfortnately.  Surprisingly, the UK has a really limited selection of a lot of foods.  I'm from New Zealand and we actually have a lot more selection of various foods at home in a tiny country, than here in England.  VERY STRANGE!

Fruit with CC isnt totally unusual here either.  You can buy ready mixed fruit and cottage cheese with either pineapple or passionfruit.  I've never tried it though.

At the moment I just can't get past the saltiness with fruit... But I'll continue to enjoy it on baked potatoes and with tomatoes!!! Laughing

I so love that idea.  If i cant like it with cottage cheese i could look at ricotta next time im at the supermarket and see if that has salt in it!

I'm pretty sure ricotta cheese will be more salty, and have much more fat.. and not good fat either, most cheese is high in saturated fats.. except for cottage cheese which is why it is a popular health food

I love cottage cheese (with salt) and pineapple.  I even add pepper.  I love pineapple on pizza, and sweet and sour sauce though.  My OH thinks it's WRONG to put pineapple on pizza / in cottage cheese.  He hates Branston pickle too.  I guess you either like fruit with savoury stuff or you don't!

I reckon cottage cheese and grape would work well too ( a bit like brie and grape - mmmm)

PS - Did  you blend the fruit and cottage cheese into a soupy mix?!  If so 'yuck'!

you blend the cottage cheese in a blender, with vanilla extract, stevia, and gelatin... let it set in the fridge for a couple hours, then put some fruit on top and serve

why would I blend it into a soupy mix?

the only way i like cottage cheese is with baked apple (apples cinnamon some sugar and squeeze lemon onto to keep fresh bake in oven for an hour) and than i let them cool in the fridge and eat them with cottage cheese, its so good!

Sorry that was in reply to Singing_Girl.  I should have added a quote to make it clearer.  I was just wondering if she'd blended her fruit / cottage cheese mix to an even consistency rather than just adding chunks of fruit to it and stirring.

Topping cheese with cheese - what a wonderful idea!  Smile

I wouldn't blend the CC.  I prefer it straight from the container with just about anything - sweet or savory.  My favorites are fresh pineapple chunks, peaches, black olives, and tomatoes.  Not all at once.

The sweet and salty is like bacon dipped in syrup - heaven!
