Rant about people who cannot spell
First let me say that I know my English is far from perfect, and I occasionally make spelling mistakes (hopefully I don't make one in this post). My intent with this rant is not to insult anyone, especially those that lack general of writing ability. This rant is aimed specifically at those who choose to spell incorrectly.
When did making spelling mistakes on purpose become popular? Seriously? I'm only 20, by the way, so I'm not some person with a grudge against youth. I understand mistakes happen and people just screw up. But that is not the same as reepppeeeeaaaatttttiiiiinnnnnggggg letters for the heck of it. I know it can be difficult to get a certain tone across in text, but using more letters does not make me think something is more important. In fact, using more letters than necessary can be downright confusing. Oh, and by the way, an abbreviation is used to shorten the amount of time necessary to write (and possibly understand) something. The difference between please and plz is three letters, and since you're typing, it should take a grand total of a half a second more to write out the whole word. Part of me thinks that some people believe not knowing how to spell is cool, because knowing how to spell might in some way imply that you know a thing or two-- which of course, would be lame.
Whatever, thhhhhannnnnkkkkkssssss for listening! ![]()
I don't mind repeating some letters, but I agree with you on the plz bit. I hate chat speak in general. There's a difference between a typo or spelling error (some words are hard to spell, haha) but chatspeak...I'll admit, I've fallen victim to the lol and sometimes the brb. I hate most of the abbreviations though, even when I'm texting I try to spell everything out because it gets to me. I've heard stories of kids today writing papers using these kinds of abbreviations. Horrible!
Try this out. Someone sent it to me yesterday.

Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!
I love that, moonikins! It is so absolutely true! The same sort of thing applies in speaking, as well. As long as the vowels are correct, we can generally catch the words with a bit of effort (a big plus when working with little kids with articulation disorders!)
But - I find I tend not to read posts that are heavily threaded with such "difficult" spellings. It's just too much work - makes my brain hurt. Or whole screens filled with text because someone can't use the ENTER on the keyboard to make a paragraph.
I don't read posts that are in all caps either...hard on the eyes
it kinda feels like someone is screaming at you too
I'm the same way. Big wallotext means I'm not going to read much of it. I won't read something that entirely in chatspeak or textspeak either. The occasional mispelling is often just a typo or someone hurrying.
If someone is trying to make a point and is opinionated, they really need to spell correctly and use proper grammar. If you "sound" stupid, I'm probably not going to give your opinion much weight.

BUT IT'S JUST SO MUCH FUN!!!
One of my friens had an issue with her phone and couldn't read her texts but she could forward them to her mom's phone. When she forwarded them, the person's name couldn't be seen.
Out of 15 texts, she only responded to mine. Why? She knew I sent them because I'm the only person that spelled out every word and didn't use double letters.
I think it's ridiculous that I proofread a paper for a classmate last semester (I'm a junior in college.) He had spelled everything he could in chatspeak and wrote the entire 5 page paper as one BIG paragraph.

No wonder all the people I know who were teaching high school English have quit - I can't imagine dealing with that every day.
You know what is ridiculous? When you are having an actual conversation, face to face with someone, and they respond with LOL.
spell check has ruined me. but i do use it. what i hate is when im trying to answer a post so fast, then the next day i see it, a few errors.
and sorry i dont CAP when i should, it comes & goes with me on this forum depending on which computer im at.
but i've never heard of claiming to not be able to spell a cool thing???
It's a code largely indecipherable by previous generations. Way cool. Or whatever term they use these days.
It used to be pig latin. Then valley talk. Kids are weird.
