RANT - Time Article
Has anyone else read this and thinks it is absolutely retarded?! ugh!
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1914857-2,00.html
Way to go Time magazine, I believe the ideal way to contribute to a growing obesity problem is to ensure the masses that by working out they could potentially just be breaking down the "control" of their mind and gaining weight. Opinions? Thoughts? I agree some of their points are ok...just ok, but the attitude in general is just atrocious. Including the fact that the article writer clearly loathes working out. Worst article ever!
Some of my favorite quotes:
1. The basic problem is that while it's true that exercise burns calories and that you must burn calories to lose weight, exercise has another effect: it can stimulate hunger. That causes us to eat more, which in turn can negate the weight-loss benefits we just accrued. Exercise, in other words, isn't necessarily helping us lose weight. It may even be making it harder. <-- Or you could skip the bucket of fries as a "reward" for working out.
2."They're like, 'Ah, I'm running an hour a day, and I'm not losing any weight.'" He asks them, "What are you doing after you run?" It turns out one group of friends was stopping at Starbucks for muffins afterward....blah blah blah....a pound of muscle burns approximately six calories a day in a resting body, compared with the two calories that a pound of fat burns. Which means that after you work out hard enough to convert, say, 10 lb. of fat to muscle — a major achievement — you would be able to eat only an extra 40 calories per day, about the amount in a teaspoon of butter, before beginning to gain weight. Good luck with that. <--Sigh, thanks for the motivational sarcasm...guess I'll just give up!
3.After we exercise, we often crave sugary calories like those in muffins or in "sports" drinks like Gatorade. A standard 20-oz. bottle of Gatorade contains 130 calories. If you're hot and thirsty after a 20-minute run in summer heat, it's easy to guzzle that bottle in 20 seconds, in which case the caloric expenditure and the caloric intake are probably a wash. From a weight-loss perspective, you would have been better off sitting on the sofa knitting.<-- So, um, drink water!!!!!
4.Many people assume that weight is mostly a matter of willpower — that we can learn both to exercise and to avoid muffins and Gatorade. A few of us can, but evolution did not build us to do this for very long. <-- So evolution built us to consume copious amounts of processed foods and sugar instead of vegetables and grains? I didn't see that in my science book in 8th grade.
5. There's also growing evidence that when it comes to preventing certain diseases, losing weight may be more important than improving cardiovascular health. <-- As clearly the two are mutually exclusive.
6.Public-health officials have been reluctant to downplay exercise because those who are more physically active are, overall, healthier. <-- And based on my entire article this is just a big fat lie says sally sourpants.
Ok I'm done, rant over.
Why is drinking water instead of gatorade not a viable option? ugh!
Ok really done now.
Reason: Locked for being redundant. Keep discussion to the active thread in Weight loss.
Uhh...
They're saying you can't outrain your diet. That's not retarded, it's truthful.
fyi - this is the third thread about this article.

the only activity that ever made me real hungry was swimming. i used to swim alot - enough that i developed rotator cuff issues. :(
I read the article and agree with your opinion of it. It irritated me to no end. People don't need to be given permission not to exercise! Sure, intake is also an essential part of the equation, but the article seemed to be saying that people can't do both! I think intake (quality and quantity) is essential, but exercise plays an equal role.
GRRRRRRRR i completely agree... and
i think the article is probably written by someone who wants an excuse for themselves to say to people, 'but i just cant lose weight'. lazy person.. grr. just because your too lazy to exercise and try to control yourself, dont go making it harder for everyone else, telling them they should just not bother. GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
