I read the funniest thing today!

Quote  |  Reply

Today, I was in the grocery store explaining to my dad why some foods aren't considered vegetarian because they contain gelatin. An elderly lady overheard me, and started to tell me that by not eating meat I was going against the bible, and ultimately going to hell. My dad then told her with a straight face that it was okay, because we were Satanists. The look on her face was priceless. MLIA

Also, is it true about the gelatin?

LOL.  It always amazes me when people feel free to butt into stranger's conversations with their 2 cents worth, as if anyone cares to hear it.

That it's made from horse hooves?  Yeah, kinda.

Wiki: Gelatin

Yes, gelatin is a meat by product. It's nice to meet a fellow Satanist! Congrats on your dad's quick wit!!! Gelatin is made from bones, I think - not sure. Rebekah

mmmmmmmmmmm....  Horse jello with pig lips and sheeps intestines! Sugarfree only 10 calories! Who-hoo!!

Yeah. Which technically makes me a bad vegetarian. Haha.

Gelatin is made from animal connective tissue. If you're vegetarian for animal rights reasons, you shouldn't eat anything with gelatin listed in the ingredients. (There are also certain brands of white sugar that are made with animal bone char... another non-vegetarian product.)

Also, that's funny that some lady would argue with you that vegetarianism is against the bible. I've never heard that one. Guess I'm going to hell and should start my Satanist journey as well!

Gelatin isn't vegetarian and nowhere in the Bible does it say that vegetarians are going to hell, it does say that it is okay to eat meat and not okay to pass judgement on those that choose to not eat meat.

I hear hell is a dry heat anyway.

Have fun hanging out Buddha, Gandhi, Darwin, and all those other cool cats.

What's that youtube video with jack black, where he's like "Well the bible says a lot of things *starts jazz song* ~like you should stone your wife!~ :D " I think it was an anti-prop 8 video.

Anyway, look out for rennet if you're a strict vegetarian.   Rennet is used in many dairy products as a gelatin, and is also non-veg.  My roomie used to live on yogurt, but  she didn't really care about vegetarianism, she'd just been brought up with it and thought meat was "icky" now.

I'll join you in hell :)  Gelatin is made from the connective tissue, mainly cow and or pig bones.

It is not vegetarian (though there are some vegetarian ones out there made from plant fiber), nor are they generally considered kosher or hal lal.

Regular gelatin is not vegetarian, but I learned in culinary school that Agar Agar is a vegetarian gelatin that is derived from seaweed.

You can find gel dessert mixes in the Kosher section of the supermarket, but be careful because there are also Kosher gelatins made from meat or fish bones while others are made from agar agar.  I found this link

Eden brand Agar Agar

you guys did a good thing. i am also against gelatin in supplements and food and would prefer to get omega acids from plants instead of fish. it was initially hard for me to accomplish all this. after talking to some friends someone pointed me here www.v-enturprize.biz and they have right supplements like the way i want. wish more people are like us save animals on this planet.

Re. people having a go when it's absolutely nothing to do with them...

On the bus the other day a young girl and old woman got on at the same time and the young girl offered the last seat to the old woman, who declined saying she was getting off soon anyway. The young girl said so was she and the old woman had such a go at her for wasting money getting the bus when she should be walking because she looked like students and students don't have much money etc. etc. etc! Where the girl got off would have been a 20-30 minute walk.

That is absolutely hysterical!!! I love priceless moments like that!! Nice one POPS!

I am so glad you posted this.  Someone at my husband's church explained the same thing to me.

According to her, God gave the animals as food, and by saying animals are not food we are committing blasphemy.  I asked her how many people were going to hell for not eating broccoli.  Broccoli blasphemers!

  Your Dad sounds really cool.

Y'all are hilariousSmile

I better get my shades out, even if it's a dry heat.

Just caught this today, on a subject directly related to why veg is a good thing:)

Wow, I wish I was quick witted like that!

I never knew that about gelatin. Sick man...no wonder I don't like the stuff!

Reading that made my day, how funny.

And exactly where in the Bible does it say not eating meat will send you to hell?  I'm not going to pretend I've read the whole Bible, but I do remember a part in the old testiment saying that people aren't s'pose to eat the blood or fat of animals.  So with all the fat in today's corn fed beef does that mean meat eaters are going to hell?  Probably not, I'm just saying you can pick any part of the Bible and make it sound like anything you want.

AHAHAHAHA YESSS!!!

I hate strangers who preach their beliefs to you, and I especially hate bible pushers.

I'm a Satanist too I guess!

BFF's?? haha
