Just started "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" a couple of days ago.
I was hooked after the first few paragraphs....and that's a good
sign. Thanks for the post. I hope it flourishes, as I'm
always interested in reading referrals.
I read, but not the normal new best seller sort of stuff.
I'm looking for a review on "The Reluctant Fundamentalist". It
sounds interesting, and it may be my next read. Any one familiar
with it?
i dont read the best seller sort of stuff either..my love for books began with a book by the name "Sweetgrass"..a native american saga....that was in 7th grade..i was hooked on those for a great while then wanted to venture out...i really like the suspense of MHC. my sister in law loves this chic named anne rice....read evthing she gets her hands on by her...lol
i like to try different things..i've found that some things i just cant read..not by subject but by author...stephen king is a big no for me...love the movies but his vocabulary is so enhanced that he decscibes one room in three pages..i get lost..lol

I read constantly, but I haven't read The Reluctant Fundamentalist (sorry)... right now I'm reading Hit Man by Lawrence Block
sry cant say that i am
I think the next things I plan on reading are a re-read of the HP series & then once I replace my books which have fallen apart, I'm going to do a Salinger run. It's time. lol
The new Dexter book is coming out soon too. If it hasn't already.

I read all the time for enjoyment whenever I can a few pages in here and there. I like Nora Roberts, Mary Higgins Clark, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Randy Wayne White, and some various other authors. I also read Memory Keeper's Daughter and really liked that book.
I love Stephen King too, biggestloserfan. :)
lol I actually dropped an English class in High School because she had us reading nothing but Stephen King & I didn't feel that was appropriate for an English class. What sort of edducation is that??
I know he's soooo popular. He just doesn't impress me.

It might not be appropriate for high school, but I would study King in college (where sexual situations, gore, and swearing wouldn't be so unacceptable), if a class were offered. I was a lit major... I really think he's great at characterization, and I love how themes, characters, and storylines intersect across his canon (and if you don't like him, forgive me for calling it a canon, I really just like him a lot) :)
I wasn't talking about adult content. My objections weren't moral. They were that Stephen King is crap for the masses, in my opinion. Ok for fun, but not for School. I also couldn't stay awake in that class. Might have been the neuroleptics I was on, but after switching teachers I stayed awake every day. lol
I was one of those freaks who wanted to read the books other kids despised. Lord of the Flies was horrid though. Two different years I had to "read" that one. lol

I'm reading Casino Royale by Ian Fleming (the first James Bond book), House of the Seven Gables by Hawthorne, and re-reading Watership Down by Richard Adams and Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About by Mil Millington.
Love reading...probably why English Lit was one of my majors...:)

I like "real literature" too (I assume that's what you meant by books the other kids despised)... but I disagree that Stephen King's novels are crap for the masses.... but perhaps we can agree to disagree :)
Man, Lord of the Flies. That really was horrid, wasn't it?

I thought so. That was the one book a lot of kids I went to school with really liked though.
I like thrillers a lot too. I'm not sure why Stephen King just doesn't grab me.

Maybe it's somewhat like my perplexity over why so many folks love Dean Koontz!
I just finished reading How to kill your husband. It was hilarious.
I really ought to try & remember to give the old V books a try again, if I can find them. I tried when I was pretty young, but I was having trouble really getting into them. My ADD & this thing I have with my eyes, wreak havoc on my reading. Back then I didn't know what it was, though. I always testing way above my level in reading, & had a good vocabulary, but the tests use smaller passages. I went quite a few years sucking up info in class so I could pass tests & never actually being able to do more than skim.
LOL sunkissed, why is it I think I might like that book! :P (especially after last night. grrrr)
I like Stephen King better than Dean Koontz. I took a Stephen King literature class in college and was very diappointed. It was suppose to be open discussion but the professor that I had was strictly lecturing on why Stephen King wrote this, etc. and in any of the interviews Stephen King has done he says he doesn't not write for a reason just for entertaining purposes.
I can understand why you don't like Stephen King and totally support your opinion but I happen to like him so I will read him I am not asking you to read him.
Just responding to the thread. I didn't care for Lord of the Flies either in high school and had to read it two separate times in school as well. I guess the main point was to open you up to various styles of writing and types of literature in high school but still never understood why we had to read it twice. One of my favorites from school that we had to read in middle school was Where the Red Fern Grows. I loved that book in school.
