Hi all,
I just got a new treadmill from Sears. It's so great! I am going to walk each day some. I tried it today after it was set up and I found I can't walk that fast like I used to at the YMCA. I had to go down 1 mile per hour at least. That means I can't walk that fast, but I can go longer if my body lets me. I found my bad hip started to hurt just after a few minutes on it, so I had to quit and rest. I figure if I at least do 3 bouts of 10 mins. that is good for a start. I will try to work up to continuous time though to get more of a benefit out of it. They say 30 mins. a day is enough to lose. If I cut my calories by 1000 a day, and work out that much I should lose 2 lbs. a week. It is going to take time, so I am not going to get frustrated about it. I will just keep working out to feel better. The heart is a muscle and needs exercise too. I'm kind of sick right now with a bad allergy/virus thing, so of course I sweated to death and got short of breath. I will feel better in time and it will be fine. For all of you out there, don't give up, just keep walking it off!

Sounds like you have a plan, and, yes, it does get easier! I love my treadmill, and I started slow, too. For me the hardest part was making sure I scheduled the time to get on it! Good idea to rest when your hip becomes painful...
Enjoy your new toy!
Sounds like a good plan. I hope you have stuck with it. I don't know how much you have to lose, but as you get down in weight, you might find less problems with joints. I am restarting my walking after having gotten out of the habit and gaining all the weight I lost. The first time I was overweight, my feet hurt. Now it is my knees so, like you, I am starting small and adding to it as I go along. I started CC just a couple of days ago, and started walking 1 week ago, so I have a long ways to go before I reach my goal
I've lost weight walking in the past, before I had to have back surgery. Now it's really hard to walk such short distances when before I could just go on and on. I have been really patient and I'm trying like %$#@ to be consistent. Even if I only walk for 30 minutes, I get out each day and do it. At first I thought I'd die from the pain...but after three weeks now, it's getting less and less. I am experiencing a very slow weight loss, but I feel better and I sleep better...that alone is worth it!
Hi, I just started cc this week and find it fun now reading and calculating everything and desiring to keep it up. I have lost so many times before and now sick of the fact I need to lose the same 25 pounds again for the ??? how many times. Anyway, I haven't started the excercise but put it off another day then another so today I will start!!! I had a treadmill loaned it to a friend then she loaned it to another and now my friends daughter -in -law took it to KC which is almost 3 hours away. Now I am thinking I need it back with the weather this winter I will find all sorts of excuses not going outside walking. Feel like a heel asking them to bring it back to me as I know it will be a problem hauling it. She has had it for 2 years. It was new when I loaned it and I know (or rather hope) she took good care of it but still find it hard to ask for it back.
Right now I am showering and going for a 30 minute walk. (outside)
Hi, I just joined today. I've been walking regularly (at least a few times a week) for about a month, but this week I made a pact with myself, I'm doing it every morning before I do anything else.
I get up, use the bathroom, drink water, then go outside. I live in a lovely rural area so walking outside is a pleasure. I'm also starting to mix it with jogging, as I read that you burn more calories when you exercise at varied speeds.
Me jogging is hilarious. I last about a minute at a time right now! I jog when I hit the shade, walk as fast as I can in the sun...and I do this for at least 20 minutes every morning.
Of course I have to stop to pet the neighbors' dogs and chat with neighbors if they are out and about, sometimes it's hard to keep up the pace! But it's so much more fun than treadmills (I'm sure I'll change my tune come winter!)
Today I stopped at the end of the driveway to pick wildflowers. My reward!
I can tell that this little bit of exercise is boosting my metabolism all day long.
I'm excited about CC - I didn't know it existed, what a great bunch of tools, and to do this with support from others is awesome!

I have a friend who walks from one telephone pole to the next and then jogs the next one, and so on.
I started biking about six months ago, just a few miles every other day at about 8-9 mph. and have since worked up to what ever distance I feel like and average 13-14 mph. I feel great now, but it did take some time to build up the stamina. I went with the bike to avoid joint stress on knees and hips which had been at times achy when I was heavy.
Good luck to you, it can be difficult to start and even more difficult to continue. Even if the weight doesn't come off as fast as you might like, you are turning fat weight into muscle weight and prolonging your life and probably improving on the quality of later life too.
I am trying to walk in the morning as well. The hard part for me is that I sit at work all day. I am up to walking about an hour each morning before the sun comes up. I find it very therapeutic. If I think of it as mentally enjoyable, it is much easier to do. Somehow, if I walk to "lose weight" I never stick with it.
Hi Everyone!
I joined CC in August but have never posted anything until now. I love this site, it is so encouraging and helpful. I thought that I would post a little something this morning because like everyone, I was walking daily (and I still do-love my Lesley Sansone DVDs) but I wasn't seeing the results as quickly as I would have liked. I decided to add a little more exercise into the mix but wanted something that was fun....hence Wii Active. I LOVE IT!! You can set it to whatever type of workout you are able to do (Light, Moderate, Heavy) and the resistance bands included with the workout DVD are great to start with....although you may want to use stronger bands as you get more fit. I enjoy the way the "game" mixes up the different exercises each time you work out and targets different areas of the body. The exercises are easy to follow and the leg strap ensures that you are doing the moves correctly. Best of all, there are "trophies" you can win as you go along and the system keeps track of your progress! You know each time you work out how much energy (calories) have been expended according to the profile you set up. Although I know the intial purchase of the Wii System is not cheap, if your family does have one....the 59 dollar investment in the Wii Active Game is money well spent! Not only has CC and my new exercise regime helped me lose weight (8 lbs and counting) but my legs and arms are beginning to show the toned effects of my Wii Active and walking efforts!
Hi everyone!
I'm a new member to Calorie Count. I don't have a treadmill, but I enjoy the exercise videos by Leslie Sansone - Walk Away the Pounds.
I lost 50 pounds a few years ago and kept them off until I got remarried a couple of years ago. Since then 20 pounds have crept back on, so I'm determined to stop the slow slide. Being 50-something and post menopausal is making it difficult, but hopefully with the support of the community here, I can keep on track and lose some weight again.
My favorite Walk Away the Pounds dvd is WATP for the Abs. The waist belt and stretchy bands really help give you a full workout while you're marching in place in front of the TV!
I just need to get more motivated to get up at 5 am to do it every day!
