I just realized that my beans are "in sauce"...

I don't follow (nor agree with) the whole anti-HFCS hype, but I did recently cut out added sugar from my diet entirely. I was rushed last night, and accidentally grabbed the wrong beans. I wanted to get plain beans, but instead got the ones that are in sauce. It's only 3g sugar, but I'm so proud of the fact that in the past three weeks I haven't consumed any added sugar, that these 3g actually make a difference.

Anyways, my question: will rinsing them make them the same as the no sugar added beans? Or will there still be a trace left, even if I rinse them thoroughly?

What happened to a sense of perspective?.....  3g of sugar will not adversely affect either your health or your weight.   Hyperventilating about a little sauce or a 'trace' of sugar on rinsed beans just might.
It's not even so much about my health or weight, but more about the whole concept.

"I'm so proud of the fact that in the past three weeks I haven't consumed any added sugar, that these 3g actually make a difference"

So yeah, I do care about the potential trace for that reason... anyone else?

When I was off sugar, I had the same problem.  I KNEW if I had just one extra gram of sugar it would be down the slippery slope again.  At the time, I would have considered washing the beans and then decided against, "just in case".

I have since become much more accepting of sugar and rely more on the calorie count versus the count of any one substance.  Moderation works for me now.

so thats to say you don't eat any fruit or anything of that sort either?

Are you diabetic?  Then worry about your sugar intake.

If you are not, your brain needs a little sugar to function well.  If you are eating fruits, good for you.

Moderation is key because it helps you stay sane.  Obsessivenes will drive you insane at a future point.

reading is not one of my fine points hahahaha

I think I got to thinking why is she so worried about 3g of sugar...she must not eat fruit or anything like that.....then that would cause a slight distrubance....but if she eats fruit then it probably wouldnt matter in the slightest.....sugar is sugar (IMO)

Rinsing the beans would remove just about all of the sugar and other added elements, I would think (I rinse my beans to get out sodium as well when they have added sauce).  So I would rinse them.  I mean, would you add SUGAR to beans if you were making them from scratch at home?

I was just about to explain, but I think you got it haha

Yeah, I think that's what I'll do and look more carefully next time...

If I were you, first I would read the ingredients.  If, by chance, they're flavoured with molasses, then I wouldn't worry about the sugar at all, because it's just part of the dish, and I wouldn't really consider it 'added' sugar.

If they weren't and are sweetened by something else, I would rinse them, on the assumption that doing so will at least remove 2.5g sugar per serving, and if it's less than .5g sugar per serving, it doesn't have to be listed on a label (and thus be easily avoidable) anyways, so you're not losing any ground.

I'm also trying to avoid added sugar. Why the **** do food packagers have to add sugar to freakin' everything???? Grrr. sorry just had to get that out.

Sugar is water soluble, whether in HFCS or another form, so rinsing the beans well should be fine.
