Reasons for Nights Sweats

Quote  |  Reply
I know you gals/guys can help with this as you are a wealth of information.  My husband has for all his adult life suffered from night sweats.  Some nights he must change his clothes 2 - 3 times a night.  I must wash the bedsheets daily.

He appears to be very healthy, and claims his sweats keeps him this way.  Any time I get a cold or the flu it avoids him.  He jokes his body works better than most and it elimiates all the toxins nightly.  He wants to gain wait and can not (he is 5" 10" and weighs 160, believe he looks great - awesome abs).  He works out twice a week and has a very physcial job, on his feet on day.

Is there any reason you know of for these night sweats?  His mom wonders about diabetes.  I am just clueless on this one.  And hey other than it benig a nusiance should we worry.

Thanks for helping.

Tammy :)

Tammy - Has he seen a doctor?  If not, he needs to!

Stanford Medical Center lists the following  as possible causes:

  • Any illness where you suffer from a fever.
  • diabetes
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Secretion from certain cells in the brain
  • Anemia
  • Hypothalamic lesions
  • Epilepsy
  • Strokes
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Migraine
  • Spinal cord infarction
  • Head injury
  • Familial dysautomia
  • Anti-nausea medication used in pregnancy
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
Thanks for the link.  I was having a heck of a time finding something on it this morning.

He has not been to the doctor for it and I will be hard pressed to get him there.  He acts like its no big deal.  I truly think it bothers me more than him.  But I plan on showing him your link tonight and hopefully open his eyes.

He does not have excessive thirst.  I actually have to force him to drink water.

Thanks again for the help.  I hope I can get him to go and be seen for this.

Tammy :)
I used to have night sweats until I cut out caffeine.  Caffeine hadn't bothered me when I was younger.  And I actually quit caffeine to help my arthritis - I didn't know it could be related to night sweats.  But once I gave up the unsweetened iced tea (about 64 oz daily), not only did my arthritis pain lessen, but I haven't had any more night sweats either.

If he drinks a lot of caffeine, he might just try reducing the amount instead of quitting cold turkey and that might do the trick.

But all of the above disorders sound serious, so if he doesn't drink a lot of caffeine, sounds like something to get checked out to me.
Yikes- I get these about 3 nights in a row... roughly once a month.

I never really knew there could be possible health reasons behind it...

He has these every night- or like mine- for a few days here and there???
He drinks Pepsi all day long.  So I would say he has a lot of caffeine in him.  I never thought of connecting the two.  Hmmm I wonder if I could get him to switch to caffeine free.  Maybe every other soda to begin with.  He also drinks a Red Bull every morning and a workout drink (that I sure is loaded) on his workout days. HMMMM  I think I will try this while I work on getting hm to be seen.  At least than we can tell the doctor we tried it.

THANKS!
Mercedesjag - he is every time he sleeps.  So even if he takes a nap it  happens.  I swear all he has to do is shut his eyes and the pores open up.
WIERD!

It's certainly got my curiosity going. Thanks for the post.

Intersting, my mother has hypothyroidism, and my grandmother has diabetes. Will be keeping my eye on this.
this happened to me right after i increased my water intake.  i thought it was that i had so much extra water, but it stopped after a few days.  i read somewhere that it can be hormonal, and i have noticed it happens during that totm now.  i will be discussing with my doc during my next visit!
ismile-

I just found this - thought you might want to show your husband

Mercedesjag  - thanks for the link.  I will have fun this one tonight.  I'll be "hey honey do you think you are going through menopause".   I have to wait for my daughter to be there too, I am not sure if she'll laugh or scream.  She keeps tellling me I am going through it now.  Poor kid has no clue, I am at least another five years away (more I hope).
For what it is worth - he should get checked out.

It sounds like he may have a hormonal imbalance - diabetes or thyroid - this also goes with the inability to gain weight.

Good luck convincing him!

Sarah
Sarah, thanks.  I have tried this evening to no avail.  I think its time to bring in his mom.  She will convince him easily.

Thank you everyone for your info.  I have been reading and learning a lot today and that will only help me convince him this is important.
Night Sweats are also a symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
