What are some reasons periods are good?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone -

About 2 months ago, I got my period back, after not having it since 2004. I gained about 5 pounds, so I'm attributing the loss of period to low body fat. However, I'm recovering from an ED, so it's very hard to get my mind NOT to think period = fat. Can anyone give me a free reasons why my period is good for me?? Just so I can be happy it's back?? It's so hard right now to think this is a good thing to have.

thanks :) kim

A period means your body is healthy, fertile and working properly.  As women we're uniquely gifted with the ability to give birth.  Your period just marks time until you choose to take up the option.

Gi-jane is right.

Getting your period means that your body is functioning properly and is healthy.

It can mean your hormones are working properly again. Having your period means your body produces enough estrogen to build up the endometrium which then gets shed (period). Not having enough estrogen as in amenorrhea (no period) can significantly increase your risk of  osterperosis. So be happy your  hormones  are working properly again.

Your body is merely healthy enough to function as it should....what a Wonderful Accomplishment!

Even if you have no intention of having children, your body is now strong enough to bring new life into the world. Before, your body was barely surviving. Each month, your period is a statement that says "I am powerful."

OK, this may sound mean, and I don't mean to twist a knife into something that you are sensitive about, but.....a period means you are normal.  This alone should make you feel blessed.  When you were in the throes of your eating disorder you were not normal.  As harsh as that may sound it's the truth.  It is a sign of health.

It is an honor to have your period.  It is a miracle every month.  Just the fact that our bodies can produce life is not something to be taken lightly.

A period means that your body is functioning properly - things are going right in there! And that is a Very Good Thing indeed. Also, having a regular period helps to reduce the risk of things going wrong in there - that lining is meant to be shed on a regular basis, and if it's not then it just sits in there gradually building up and up. If your body is working right you're less likely to develop ovarian cysts, you're less likely to get fibroids, and you're less likely to have fertility problems when the time comes that you want to have children. No period equals no babies - EVER.

kim,

I'd say the best thing about it is you're back to being a woman again! I took a glance at your birthday and you're just about my age. I'm sure you first got your period more than 10 years ago. Do you remember that? Scary but wonderful. It was like I'm officially not a girl anymore. Be proud of the woman you are and work on continuing to get healthy! Best of luck to you.

It means you are still young and that you are healthy!  Enjoy!

you can have children! u can bring sweet little new lives into this world! i envy you :(

losing your period is a big health risk! getting it back is a HUGE part of recovery. it means your body is at a fairly healthy weight (or healthier). amenorrhea (aka loss of period) raises risk of osteoporosis, permanent infertility, and cancer of the uterus.

consider this as an important, visible step in recovery. good luck and congrats!

Proof that the plumbing is in workable order.

It's confirmation that whatever form of birth control you use worked!

Probably makes you less susceptible to infections.

You don't have to see a gynocologist to find out why you're not getting them.

Your officially a woman, again! Woman = beautiful, healthy and strong!

you are a woman!

Having your period means you're healthy enough to carry a baby.

When you don't get your period for months on end, that means you are seriously unhealthy, and your body knows "Hey, I won't be able to support a baby for 9 months, so no egg this time. Maybe next month!"

And when you don't get your period, it means your estrogen levels are all out of whack. Estrogen is key for strong bones - without it, calcium starts leaching from your bones, which is why women start getting osteoporosis after going through menopause. You don't want osteoporosis!! Have you talked to your doctor about a bone density scan? After not having it for four years I would be absolutely terrified about my bones. :S

Periods are good because your body is telling you that it's healthy enough to do everything it's supposed to do and not everything it needs to do in order to survive. I know periods suck sometimes, but it's perfectly normal. Props to you for overcoming an ED! It's a difficult thing to come through, but you did it and your body is rewarding you by showing signs of normalcy.

You're a strong woman. Keep the good stuff going!
