What do you recommend to clean out your system?
Asked by anonymous on May 29, 2009 in Health Conditions

I have been eating prunes and taking Metamucil plus a stool softener but I still feel like I can't go to the bathroom and like I need to clean out my system.  What do you recommend?

Answer

You should gradually increase your dietary fiber intake until you reach at least 35 grams a day.  Count the number of grams you are presently eating and increase by about 5 grams every few days.  Choose VERY high fiber foods like bran cereal, lentils and beans, and raw fruit and vegetables.  Green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.) and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, etc.) and produce with skins and seeds are all especially good.  Also, drink 2 quarts of water a day and walk in-between meals to aid in digestion.  In addition, do not eat too little food because a critical mass of digestion by-products is needed to trigger the defication reflex.  See a list of high fiber foods at About.com.
