Food in NYC is very very expensive (I grew up there).

Don't eat street food. Frequent the salad bars, and beyond that DON'T count calories.

West Side Sushi on 9th Avenue has great tasting, fresh sushi and usually meals work out to less than $12 per person.

Elixir juice bar has good smoothies and wraps...

And it's not exactly "New York-y" but there are Pret a Mangers all over the place.
Just close your eyes when you walk past the cheesecakes... *drool*
NYC banned trans fats, so at least any junk you eat won't have that to worry about. There are so many good restaurants that it's hard to suggest particular ones. Many of the best places are dives and you just have to discover them for yourself.

Eat what you like, but not as much as you can. Choose wisely from the menus offered. Walk the city between meals. You'll be alright.

Check out  menupages.com for NYC restaurants by type and neighborhood.  The city is a mecca for good eats!!!  If you're wanting something quick and city like, try F & B (short for Franks and Beans).  They have incredible veggie hot dogs prepared with more creativity than the louvre.  For high class vegan cuisine, definitely go to Candle 79.  The meals were all organic, vegan, and healthy.  Due to my excitement about their menu, I ordered so many different items and can say, without hesitation, they were the best tasting  food I've had in the city.   Also, any Non-Chain restaurant should be able to accomodate your food needs.   But the website above should be a great starting point.  Have fun!!!!

It's funny about the cheesecake thing. Growing up I never liked cheesecake, even though it was on every menu and you would see them out in the open. Suddenly after I moved out of NYC, I began to love cheesecake. Go figure.

Also about the NYC trans fat ban - it doesn't apply to pre-packaged items OR baked goods (baked goods are exempt for another year, to give places time to retool their recipes), so that cheesecake probably will have trans fats in it.
Where are you going to be staying or hanging out and how much do you want to spend? I can recommend tons of restaurants.

Last night I ate at a place called Lavagna on East 5th between Aves A & B which is awesome. I have been there many times and it's reproducibly EXCELLENT food. It's Italian and not healthfood but it's high quality, delicious and it's possible to eat reasonably (I had an asparagus/parmesan/mushroom starter with a striped bass/leek/spinach risotto entree).

As far as supermarkets, most of the routine ones suck. They are small, dirty and not nice food. However, there is a Trader Joes (but beware there is usually a line around the block to get in on weekends), many Whole Foods and tons of other gourmet supermarkets (Gourmet Garage, Dean and Deluca, Eli's etc) with the freshest of fresh foods.

As far as fruit and veg, well the street carts are the best and CHEAPEST place to buy fruit and veg. Beware though as the half-life of the fruits and veg is never as long as if you bought elsewhere (b/c they sit in sun all day). I buy my cherries, strawberries and tomatoes every morning from the street vendors and eat them as snacks all day at work!

I live on sushi in NYC so if that is something you like, just let me know what neighborhood you will be in and I can recommend a good place.

Get ready to spend though! Being healthy in NYC is COSTLY!

I'm not quite sure where I'll be staying yet, it was going to be the Marriot but not anymore. Luckily for me, the pound is so strong against the dollar =D so we don't have to worry so much about the money, but still don't want it to be costly so we'll have more left over for clothes =P

i'm looking for places that do labelled wraps, salads etc so that I know what's in them. and healthy restaurants.

I'll update you when I know where abouts we're going to be staying =) thanks for all the info guys! xxx

jk0319 the website you suggested is wicked! thanks a lot :D
Speaking from experience, you want to avoid the labeled wraps and salads. You don't really know how fresh they are.
NY is expensive (I should know, I live here), but the good thing is that there is a IMMENSE variety of places to choose from.  Restsuarants that cater to low calorie, vegan, raw food, low fat, etc.   I see menupages was already mentioned, but it's great!  Also, check out the restaurant search at www.nytimes.com
I agree, the labeled wraps and salads 9/10 times do not have calorie info and are often totally swamped with mayo. I would suggest you order your sandwiches fresh but beware as samdwiches in the US are nothing like in England or Ireland. You get 2-4 servings of meat and they are saturated in mayo unless you ask otherwise. Be specific is the best advice I can give.

If you want to have the biggest sandwich you will ever see in your life (and a major tourist attraction) order the pastrami at Katz Deli on Houston. You won't believe your eyes.
I'm going to be in the city next week, but thankfully I'm staying with my sister/guide. She will know where all the really good food is. Plus, we'll cook in too. But mostly, I plan on using the dogs to burn more calories then I'll ever take in.

Weather is ok the past few days ... 70s sunny though a bit hazy today, maybe it will rain/t-storm later ... but it was torrential earlier in the week and I suspect the t-storms will come back ... check out forecast at weather.com and type in the zip of your hotel. (or just type in 10021 if you don't know yours)

omg I just checked it and it says storms =( for the first few days and showers after that. someone told me the weather was well nice over there, it's worse than over here! well disappointed at that. but oh well, I'll just have to carry a brolly whilst lugging my shopping around lol.
The weather in NYC is pretty variable. What you see forecasted today has about a 50% chance of being accurate by the time you get there.
