      I am a 28 year old woman and i recently found out that I am pregnant with my first baby. I am 5' 6" and I weigh around 165 lbs (25 lbs more than what I should weigh ;( ). My caloric intake before pregnancy was around 1200 cal's/day....and now that I am 5 weeks pregnant, this is still what I am eating but I have made sure to include more protein and needed stuff in my diet..So, now my total intake per day:

Calories = 1260
Protein = 52 gms
Fibre = 43 gms
100% dmv of Calcium

In addition to this, I am also taking once a day multivitamin which will also provide me with the needed vitamins, minerals and folic acid (400 mg/day). Since I am overweight, I used to walk for an hour everyday (2.5 miles). Last week I could not do my regular walk. And this week I find that eventhough I am sticking to around the same number of calories, my pants are already snug on me. :( and when I weighed myself, I see that I have gained around 3 lbs. How can this be? I am not even showing yet at 5 weeks. My question is: is what I am eating o.k for my baby or should I increase my intake? Also how can I gain 3 lbs and my pants become tighter around the belly as I am not even showing since I am still at 5 weeks of pregnancy? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. And I have absolutely no morning sickeness nor any signs of it. In fact without my missed period, I would not even know I was pregnant.

I would consult your doc on your first visit, but 1260 seems really REALLY low to me. In both of my pregnancies my doc told me I should be eating around 1600-1800 cals. I was about 10lbs over weight with my second pregnancy as well.

 Mainly because baby is going to need all that fat and nutrients to grow properly. The snug pants can probably be attributed to water gain, as baby is going to need lots of it! You can expect to be dog tired all the time until the end of your first trimester. Some ladies can work through it. I would just fall asleep and curl up on the floor anywhere I could.

There are many websites that have The Do's and Don'ts of Pregnacy Eating, but just a rounded diet of fruits, veggies, and protiens and you should be fine. Your doc will give you a hand out of what he prefers you to do. But all of the docs I had said that you should increase your Folic Acid, as this helps with brain development. I can't remember exaclty, but I think 800 mg is the recommended dose? A pre-natal vitamin supplement is better suited then a normal multivitamin, as it has higher doses of the vitamins and minerals you and baby need.

I agree with m0m6, you should consult with your doctor.  But you should definitely increase your calories as 1260 is not enough for most pregnant women.  You may be taking the vitamins but your baby will need the actual calories from food (as will you).

Here is are a couple calculators that you can use:

And here is a good article to check out:

Most websites will recommend eating at least your maintenance calories during the first trimester, add 300 calories during your second, and then 300-500 during your third.  But again, it varies so the best person to talk to would be your doctor.

Thanks m0m6 and undertherainbow for your inputs. I will talk to my doctor about nutrition. Since my first doctor's appointment is not until my 7th week, I needed some advise till then. That is the reason for my post.
