recovery from starvation mode

Quote  |  Reply
Okay, I'm recovering from starvation mode because i know that i for sure wasn't eating enough in the past,

i've recently began eating healthier (about 1200-1400 calories per day) and i've been going to the gym and working out.

i've been gaining weight and i expected that,

but i am wondering when my body is going to come out of starvation mode and stop holding onto the food that i give it

Hi! It only took me about 2-3 weeks and I could actually feel the change as it happened. Sounds strange but true, my body warmed up and I could literally feel it burning calories and my hunger became genuine need for food rather than a complex emotional trigger. It was amazing and I became so much happier! Good luck. Please stick with it through the initial gain. It is so worth it. Truly.
Hallo..... It took myself 4 months to completely sort the starvation mode, but over the last 10 years I had a deficit of 1200+ for 6 days and over-induldged by 4000 cals 1 day.
The following is from this article http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/core_march_8. htm

Especially see points #3 and #5

Some Take-Home Points

  1. The most common cause of obesity is Americans are sedentary overeaters/drinkers. Nothing in this article should be construed as to say that under eating is the root cause of obesity. It's not.
  2. It IS common for many men and women to be under eating with sporadic binges as I described here. This creates a perfect environment for continued obesity even if total caloric intake is quite low on average.
  3. Low-carb followers or "starvers" WILL see the scale go up when calories are consumed at reasonable levels again and carbohydrates are reintroduced. Live with it. Deal with it. It's going to happen. 98% of the gain will be water.
  4. The time it takes for mental acceptance and other adjustments to occur will vary but one should expect a two to four week window for these things to take place. Being forewarned with an article like this may speed this process up some.
  5. Once the right types of foods are consumed and the right caloric intake is consumed and the right ratios of carbohydrates, proteins and fats are consumed on a consistent basis, then, and only then, will metabolism begin to be restored and the key to fat loss be inserted into the lock with a noticeable drop in the scale resulting. This may take an additional two to four weeks to occur. Your metabolism is never dead or broken for good. But it may take several weeks of proper eating and activity for it to be restored.

  6. From day one, until the first, noticeable drop in the scale occurs may be four to six weeks--maybe one to two weeks longer. Those who give up on the one-yard line will never see the scale drop as will occur when intelligent persistence and consistency over time are adhered to.

It's taking me a little over 3 months. Here's another post you may find helpful.

thanks,

so, after my body gets used to me eating normally, am i going to lose the weight that i've gained?
I have recently started to learn how to eat right again after being in starvation mode for 2+ years. When I first started, I was down to 114, and happy with the way I looked. I am most comfortable with being at 117 which is what I have always maintained at.  I have gained 7-9 pounds since 3 months ago(117). This may not seem like much to anyone, but at 5'2" and 125 pounds(today), it has added alot to my waistline and my pants don't fit right. I recently took up a gym class in school, plus I joined an outside gym. I started the regimen at my school almost 4 weeks ago at 3 times a week for 1 hour, and started going to the gym last week(2-3 times at 1 hour). I gained 4 pounds in one day and it hasn't come off, in fact, most days it adds on 2 more pounds. I don't know when this is going to start going in reverse, but all I really want is for 10 pounds to come off before April. That is my goal and according to this site, it is realistic. I haven't seen any results and it is very discouraging. How is one supposed to keep motivated during a time like this?
I'm in exactly the same situation! I think my body has been in starvation mode for a while now as i have been eating under 800 calories a day. Errm i was just wondering, how much weight do you think i will gain overall from this and over how much time? Also will i lose this weight again when my body comes out of stavation mode? Pleeeease help =] <3 xx  **Thankyou**
Since I started, I gained 7 pounds but it seems to have stopped at that point, and after you begin to eat right and exercise, it will come back off but you will be healthier!
afisoilrasmus, it should likely reverse itself soon, especially with the effect of added exercise- if nothing else it will make your body feel alive and get the blood pumping, so hopefully that will help spur things into action. If it doesn't, at least you know that you're doing something healthy for your body and that it WILL get the picture. How much are you eating now as opposed to when you were losing unhealthily? Are you at a healthy rate for weight loss? Or weight maintenance? I think that the difference can also have an effect on the rebound. Also, you may want to bump up to maintenance for a while, but continue to exercize, just so your body really realizes that you're serious about this health thing and aren't going to deprive it again. Then perhaps it would be less reluctant to let go, haha!
I weigh 125 right now, I was 117 before I did the starvation thing and I was confortable there, although I did like weighing 113 at my lowest:) I just want to go back to that 117 that I was healthiest at and eating right at. But its been hard to figure out how to lose the fat percentage that I have accumulated from starvation mode. I started the starvation to maintain, but it came back to bite me in the butt as you can see. I am used to eating no more than 700 calories a day, and I have had to bump that up to at least 1200, which is still too much for me cuz I cannot fit that much in my stomach, so I am learning how to get those calories without over doing it, using nuts and sunflower seeds according to www.whfoods.com . I just want results now but I know that it isnt going to happen like that. ha ha.

yes. This is happening to me. It makes me want to cry. Now that I am running, using a stationary bike, and strength training I am gaining 2-5 pounds a day. It makes me want to go back to starving, although I KNOW I just have to wait it out a little bit longer.

the same is for me, and I am wondering how much time it will take to my body trust me again? do you think it depends on how many thime have you been given starving your body? I mean if I have been giving 700 cals per day to my body during a year it will take more time than if it was just for three months? or is not up to it?

It took me nearly a year to get my metabolism in check and working properly. BUT, I had been under-eating (and as a result gaining like CRAZY) for over 10 years (more like 15 or so).  I had to work with a nutritionist to get things going properly again ... but once I got myself fixed up ... I am definitely on my way to losing and not doing too bad of a job at doing it, either.  I feel better now ... and I look better than I have ... mayb since high school!  It was a long road ... and I wanted to give up ... but I am so glad I didn't!  Hang in there ... you will prevail!

according to other posts it seemn to be that the time you have been starving your body counts, so the less you keep yourself into starvation mode the easier you will recover your metabolism but a year is not that much keeping in mind you were malnourished for 15 years, so I mus expect to get my metabolism back aftertwo or tree months or not?

I'm so glad I found this post.  I have been in starvation mode since about July, but I just recently started exercising.  Before I started working out, which was in January, I weighed 113 pounds.  I loved my size and weight, so I decided to start working out to tone up.  Since January I went from 113 to 120 pounds.  I have cried so many times, because I am eating healthy and steadily gaining weight.  I do not know what else to do.  In the last week, I have increased my calories from 800 to 1200 calories a day, and I have gained 2-3 more pounds.  According to this post, that is normal, but I want to know if the extra pounds will ever come off.  I am very disappointed and frustrated with my body right now.  I am not going to give up on exercising because I love the way it makes me feel, but  I do hope my body goes back to normal sooner rather than later.  Thanks for letting me vent!!!

If you keep exercising eventually the weight will come off, but it takes time and even if you hate it dont stop eating well it could be worse

After 4 weeks of eating 700-800 calories, I upped my calories to 900 then 1000, then 1100 and I put on 6 pounds in 2 weeks... I finally decided to listen (I'm stubborn) to the people on CC and upped them again to 1400 on non-active days and 1500 on exercise days... I lost the 6 pounds in another 2 weeks and I'm starting to lose slowly... 0.6-0.8 lbs a week...But I have so much more energy... The weight came back fast after I upped the calories and I was SOOOO tempetd to go back to 700 but I didn't and the weight left as fast as it came... Good luck

ROYLUCIE92: the weight came back after you upped to 1400-1500 or after bumping to 1100? I think I'm a bit confused. then after gaining the 6 pounds you increased more but saw no more weight gain from the initial 6 and once increasing to 1400-1500 you were losing again?

I also feel stuck. I work out pretty well 4-5 days a week and it's been 4 weeks since I started CC. I burn 2500-2800 calories on my workout days and eat about 2000 a day. I feel fatter and it sucks, it's made me want to work out more to compensate for the gain. I don't know what I could be doing wrong. I should be shedding weight with a 500 deficit a day, but seems impossible. It's very frustrating, but I was working out alot on only 1200-1400 calories a day...not alot at all.

how many time you were eating 1200 1400 cals? and how much work out you used to do? and how much weight have you gained? were you on starvation mode?
