Reheating Foods

Quote  |  Reply

Lately I've been reading about all of the negative effects of microwaving foods, so I was wondering what I could do as a safer alternative to reheating leftovers.  I've tried just putting the food I want heated into a pan on my stove, but it doesn't seem to stay heated for very long once its off the pan, and I'm also afraid of burning it if I keep it on for too long.  I feel a little dumb asking about this, but I don't think my parents or brothers would help me if I asked them, so i just thought I'd give it a shot and see what anyone has to say.

It depends what you're trying to reheat.  I've not heard too much about 'negative effects' of microwaves but they are something of a one trick pony and they can do an uneven job.

If it's something liquid like a soup then you could bring it to a simmer in a saucepan for a few minutes.  If it's more solid e.g. a piece of pizza, lasagne or quiche, wrap/cover it in foil to prevent it drying out and place in a moderate oven until heated through.  Steamers are another option... place the food to be reheated in foil and steam.

What food were you trying to heat up?

Okay thanks, those suggestions make sense, and I'll try them out.  Oh I was trying to reheat some kidney beans, chicken, carrots, snow peas, and wheat noodles.

The only thing i've heard about heating foods in the microwaves is the whole thing about putting wax or plastic wrap on top cuz it becomes cancerous or something, i dont really believe it but my dad really does so hes made me stop. I think as long as youre using a microwave safe dish its fine in the microwave.

I'd really like to help otherwise but i feel that the stove keeps it warmer than the microwave a lot longer, but thats just me. To keep from burning stuff, you can start it on a low heat and gradually turn it up. ^_^ stirring REALLY helps, ive learned.

Our microwave just broke, so I've been putting everything in the oven to reheat.  I just set it to warm and put the food in for 10-20 minutes.  Obviously it takes quite a bit longer, things end up a little bit dry (but not bad), but overall it works out alright.
