Reintroducing SOME sort of excersice into my life

Quote  |  Reply

Kinda of some tmi stuff in here, but I really need some advice:

I'm gradually recovering for self-imposed restrictive eating/over excersicing (I hesitate to say anorexia as I've never been diagnosed...but yeah). I was at my worst for maybe about 2-3 months. I'm still underweight, but for the past month+, I've been eating lots, upping my calories and have TOTALLY cut out cardio and other excercise in hopes of getting my period back and getting back to a more reasonable weight.

The thing is, I've always been really active and LOVED running. Esspecially now with the weather getting better, its KILLING me I can't go for a jog or something.

Is there ANY sort of excercise I could do, even strength training, that would be okay for me at this point, but would also satisfy my itch to be alittle bit more active?? Or should I completely forget about it? The only equiptment I have at my disposal is an elliptical (haven't used it for ages..) and a bike, and I don't have much money, but I will buy weights/cheap stuff if I have to.

Any advice would be really appreciated :)

Then leave if you hate CC so much. Don't take it out on us. I wasn't suggesting that she only increase her protein intake - obviously calories are vital too, I'm not stupid Lala.

And my BMI is in the healthy range, DEFINATLEY not 13, thank you very much.

Kate, just to let you know, Lala wasn't referring to you when she commented about BMIs of 13. She was referring to the extremely underweight posters that are terrified of taking the first step in recovery and are fretting over itsy bitsy minuscule matters such as the extra three baby carrots that they ate. You are doing wonderfully in recovery both mentally and physically, are literate and are intelligent...though rather blunt and sarcastic in ways like Lala (and practically everybody else) is. Don't take her post in the wrong manner. :)

Teck's BMI is 13. Not yours.

I would love to have the oppertunity to chage dietitians but i live in a REALLY small place and I'd have to travel across the country to see another one :S Its rubbish, there isn't even a support group around or anyone I can talk to.

My BMI isn't 13.

*edit* Thanks zebulancherry just read your post. I love eyeliner...bit too much maybe :P

Lala, in the past you've been a huge help to many people, I'm sure. Maybe you should take a break from CC until exams are over. :) I know what it's like.. I have the most important exams I've ever taken so far in one week and it's STRESSFUL. I don't think CC will fall apart while you're away for awhile, and if it does, so be it. You are so much more important that this website. Like.. someone... said, you're human, and humans need breaks.
There are quite a few in the WG forum that really appreciate you, and I'm sure for that you deserve a break.

No, according to a recent post of yours your BMI went from 13.3 to 13.7 with a 2 lb gain.  You are not anywhere near a healthy weight and definitely need to gain.  2 lbs is just the start of your journey.  Given that you have no support nearby have you considered in-patient treatement?

It was less than 2 mos ago. What do you weigh? What amount of calories are you eating now?

Woww I can't believe that was 2 months ago :P Well I'm still underweight for my height (I'm at about 113) and I try not to count on a daily basis but last time I tallied I was at about 2300-2500. (And again, I'm not working now so I am almost COMPLETELY sediatary...I plan to up it again when I start working). I've already gained a few pounds and am steadily gaining. I just thought the weights/stretching might make me feel better adn satisfy my craving for cardio :P

What has your doctor/therapist/recovery team recommended?

Once you are at a healthy weight and eating enough to maintain that, your body will allow you to build muscle again and you'll be able to do cardio.  It really only takes a couple of weeks to get back into reasonable shape and then a few more to get back into good shape and be able to build on it from there.  Whatever you lose in terms of physique really is worth the trade off imo for regaining your overall health.  Plus the stress of trying to build muscles or maintain muscles is probably not what you body needs while you're trying to gain enough weight to be out of danger...now having said that weight lifting would be a better choice I would think than cardio.

Have you thought of perhaps a stretching and flexibility regime?  Without either cardio or weights, you could work at keeping what you do have while gaining weight.  Improved flexibility is wonderful in the long run and is one of the things that most people lose as they get older.

If it's activity you're after try some yoga yeh?   Fun, relaxing but challenging.  Or just do some situps and stuff which won't burn lots of calories but will rave up the appetite.  I know it's probably not what you want to hear but cardio is NoT a good idea at the moment.  Just think, you have the rest of your life to do all the cardiovascular exercise you want but until you've gained some weight it's not going to help with anything and will probably just weaken your joints.

Maybe set your self a healthy goal weight at which you will let yourself start exercising - the sooner you are a reasonable weight, the sooner you can exercise, sorted! xx

I have to say I tried yoga before I began restricting...and I found it REALLY hard/tiring! It'd probably be too much for me now... I think I'll stick to the situps/strength training - I'm buying me some weight tomorrow ;D. I'll also def up the stretching, which I'm really finding I'm enjoying. Thanks for the support everyone :)
