Relief of sore muscles

Quote  |  Reply

So I am a gymnast and went to practice for the first time in a few weeks yesterday. I made sure I stretched a lot when I left to try and prevent myself from being too sore...but this morning i woke up and can barely move! My abs, arms, back and legs are all super sore. I only have a week left at home and my competition season is quickly approaching so I need to get into the gym. Anything other than advil and heat that I can do today so that I can move tomorrow? Thanks!

i have read in a lot of studies lately that coffee helps with DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). it doesnt seem to help me too much but its worth a try. i dont know how much you have to drink for the effect- i think its something like 3 cups. also, and this i do think works for me- is tomatoes, they have a certain vitiman or mineral that fights inflamation- it starts with an 'l' i cant remember though. i have also heard cold baths work, and never take a hot bath. otherwise- get enough sleep, eat enugh food, get proper protien, and take vitimans. unfortunately though, i dont think anything works like  a miracle, wihtout trying to heal, i take upto 5 days to recover from a kick-my-ass workout, and withall they right steps, i still getsore for about 3 days.

eats something with onions in it! the sulfur from the onions will keep the soreness under control. I know it sounds weird but it works!

Its probably acid in the muscles. I get the same thing when I start biking heavy after the off season. What usually works for me, despite how boring it is, is doing extremely light work using the same muscle groups directly after a ride, or in your case practice. It relaxes the muscle, speeds recovery, eliminates acid, etc.

You might have noticed I use the word acid alot, and thats because excercise in itself is acidifying to the body. To make it less of an issue, you could take more alkalizing minerals, eat more alkalizing foods, etc. etc. I personally dont believe in the whole acid/alkaline holistic movement but it works for some people.

Another one that seems to help me is protein. I was really sore from a workout thte other day and my b/f told me to drink one of his prtoein shakes and I did. I felt soooo much better afterwards. I don't know if it was because I wasn't getting enough or not but anything is worth a shot when you feel that way. Good Luck.

Also, if what above poster said is true about the acid thing then Spirulina is good for alkalizing the body....

I'm going to disagree with the suggestion to not take a hot bath. I'd come home from soccer practice and take a hot shower or bath and stretch some more in the bath/shower and I'd be LESS sore than I would have with out. It's just your muscles getting used to the routine again, I guess.

If they are really sore then don't go so hard the next session and give them a chance to recover. I know that's hard to do when you are training to compete, but I would think that you would want to be healthy for the competition
