Replace Cheese & Sausage!
What do I do. I am here because I like hiking and weight lifting, but I love cheese and sausage. Does anyone else share my weakness?
Have you found and "good" replacements?
There is low cal Morning Star breakfast sausage patty soy alternative . . . but I am feeling weak again! I am heading for the dinner down at the corner
I treat cheese like its a treat. I like the string cheese ones and I eat them as my snack at night or something. I dont know what it is but it is kinda fun to me to peel the cheese, i think that helps lol. I read an article about "mindful eating" and it says to enjoy the taste and texture of food and that is somehting this is good for.
Also, I dont know what you like cheese on, but get it sliced thinner from a deli, or the finely shredded so it looks like more but is a lot less =]
Sausage... beats me!....
I forget exactly what the brand is, but there are frozen breakfast sausages that are a mix or pork and turkey, tastes like pork and is about 130 cals a serving (My ex loved these).
Still not exactly healthy, but its better :)
Eat cheeses with a stronger flavour so you'll eat less & still be satisfied.
Try lean sausages or turkey sausage. Honestly, just the idea of a sausage turns me off.
I was going to also suggest a stronger cheese. Much less is needed but it has all the taste. Also consider half-fat cheese - most of the time there is no variation in flavour.
Can't help with sausages, though, I've never really been a big fan. D;
Thanks everyone!
Mindful eating sounds right. I love a triple cream brie, or a hearty aged white cheddar, or toasted goat cheese yummy.... and I think if i can just have the good stuff 1oz at a time I may get through this.
Sausage however is another problem, from charizo to summer sausage, Amy's creative brats and chicken sausages, breakfast pattys, to a hearty french pate' I only have a solution for the breakfast patties...
Turkey sausages, vegetarian sausages, vegetarian patties... I also know you can get chorizo made of turkey in some places. All of these are inherently lower calorie (though still check the packaging). And if all else remember moderation - look for lean sausages, good quality, with more meat than fat. Then moderate. A quarter of your plate with carbs, a quarter with protein, and half with vegetables or fruit at your main meals. This could mean two nice, plump lean sausages, a helping of root veg mash and vegetables of your choice at dinner, as an example.
Eating healthily includes eating the unhealthy once in a while, as long as you apply moderation of such. This is the beauty of calorie counting; you can work whatever you want into your diet and your calorie intake.
Oh how wonderful, turkey charizo!
You're right about the moderation, I didn't even realize I had a problem until my little sister pointed it out for me... LOL
There are also veggie charizos (I got some from Trader Joe's about a week ago, and I think a few brands make them as well). They're actually really good, as are the Italian sausages sold in the same area (near the produce).
For sausage, MorningStar makes these pretty good veggie sausage links. They make patties also.
edit to add: Actually, they could be really bad and not taste like sausage at all. I haven't had any red meat since I was around 10, so I really don't remember.
Still worth a try maybe?
Dude. There are some things that have no substitutes. Pate is one of them. There are all sorts of vegetarian bean pates out there, but for me there is absolutely no comprimising a nice cognac infused fois gras pate. I buy mine country style from a local farm, omgz. Totally worth every millicalorie.
Some people like veggie alternatives, some people do better with animal products. Don't force yourself into anything you don't like.
The best part about exercise is that you can eat more freely. Focus on quality fitness & quality food. Eat your sausage. With champagne. Mmmm.
lalabanana and cellophane_star have the right idea: cheeses with a stronger flavor.
I LOVE spicy, and I found a pepper jack that is made with habanero!!! They have jalapeno jack, too....but the habanero jack is what I like. I can have a serving with an apple and it is the perfect combination. The cheese is so hot and flavorful, I couldn't eat it fast if I wanted to.
Jimmy Dean makes a low fat sausage that is something like, 60 calories per serving. Just take a look next time you are at the store and do some calorie comparison.
i really like tofurky italian sausage in sundried tomato, all of the tasty and none of the gross (those crunchy bits of cartilage in sausage = ick).
every dieter i know (who eats dairy) swears by laughing cow cheese.
myself i like soy cheese, but i have to be careful about the brand (some have milk protein in them) and it DEFINITELY takes some getting used to.
before i was vegan i was a cheesitarian, so i feel your pain. ![]()
Replace the sausages with veggie burgers...dip them in a strong mustard and it's like a hash brown/sausage combo.
Also, just eat them in something like an egg white scramble rather than by themselves and a little bit can go a long way. Sprinkle feta cheese on a salad and again, a little bit goes a long way.
HEB makes a "lite" breakfast sausage that i really like with my morning oatmeal. i also make my servings about 3/4 of their recommended serving. still get my protein fix, but not quite as many cals.
I love sausage. I have tried the imitation types, and I think they're repulsive. My solution is to view sausage as a condiment. Instead of having one or two (4-oz) links as the star of my dinner, I'll use one link in a dish that serves four or even eight.
And I would recommend something similar to what people are saying about cheese (another love, but that one hits me in phases). I'd say to buy the best sausage you can find. Or make the sausage yourself. Then, limit it to once a week, and view it as a real treat.
I LOVE SAUSAGE!!! I learned this trick from a friend. I choose my fav reg raw sausage from the meat case, I remove it from the casing and when I cook it in crumble form I add crumbled up veggie sausage. That way the flavor of the "good stuff" gets on the veggie sausage and it all tastes the same and I feel like I'm eating more then I actually am.
It did take me awhile to accept doing it this way means no more links or patties, but I made the sacrifice. :-)
Good luck on your journey.
I ate a low sodium farmer john sausage link today and spit it out..........it was the grossest sausage I ever had in my life! LOL don't buy them
Genius!
I'll definitely try this one, mixing the good stuff in with the tofu or whatever I bet that's a great compromise! thanks for sharing. makes me feel like I am handling contraband LOL
Good to know that there are creative minds working on the problem.
"Cheesitarian"
I'm having T-shirts made.
LOL I think I love the word.
Thanks for the lead on Trader Joes!
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
