replacing grains with fruit and milk- nutrient deficient?
So lately I haven't been eating grains. Maybe once or twice a week I'll have some bran cereal or old fashioned oatmeal, but for the most part I just eat fruits, vegetables, chicken / turkey / tuna / fish / eggs, skim milk, cottage cheese, and the likes.
I take a multivitamin, and I exercise often. I feel healthy, energized, renewed... Life is great! I don't eat added sugars in any form, I get lots of fiber and protein, I sleep 8.5 hours a night, I rediscovered the elliptical, I have a week off work, I'm downloading free Open Yale Courses to increase my knowledge, I'm 'shopping' for a youth group...
So it's not affecting me... yet. But I don't eat breads, even pasta, I don't eat red meats. They're not evil- nearly everything is okay in moderation, but my moderation includes differently colored fruits and vegetables, not fruity breakfast cereals.
Do you guys think I'm missing out on a key nutrient? Folic acid? Phosphorus? I don't believe in multivitamins as complete replacements... Should I find a new food to boost my nutrition in these areas?
hmm.. I don't know much about it, but someone had posted a similar post in a forum a few months back, and i remember researching it, and reading on a website that cutting out carbs(which is essentially what your doing when you aren't eating grains, right?sorry if im wrong..) and living on a low-grain, low-fibre diet actually won't effect some people. I guess everyone's body really is different, and reacts in different ways? I read one major problem with low-grain, low-carb diets is not enough fibre, which results in..digestive issues. But I guess it may not affect you. If your taking multivitamins, they should be effective, according to some two, random sweedish doctors that made a report about supplements for vitamins,fibre,etc.. um,sorry i didnt help much.just thought id throw this out there.
I am sorry I don't have much to say about this, as I haven't ever thought about it. but as long as you are eating enough veggies of many different colors, I don't think it would be a big issue, vitamin wise.
corn is a grain.
but i get plenty of carbs, in milk sugars, in natural fruit sugars... plenty of carbs, and LOTS of fiber. i was wondering if the bread or dry cereal itself i used to live on had a key nutrient that i'm lacking
but if you eating enough veges that will probably help. It also depends on how much selenium is in the ground where you food comes from (eg in some places in scandanavia they had to start adding selenium to the grain, because the COWS were getting sick) but if you feel healthy you are probably okay.
I also don't eat so many grain products, and I think I am fine (and I don't even take a multivitamin)
if you are trying to get pregnant it might be a different story.
(or hiv/aids, which selenium is supposed to be good for)

Then if it says there may be a potential for deficiencies, follow the links provided and it'll tell you what you might be missing, the potential health effects, and foods that can supply the nutrients.
I also feel better on reduced grains but I still eat 1-2 servings daily (for example just 1/2 cup to one cup of rice or other grain at dinner) while dieting, and slightly more on days I do cardio. Personally if I cut them out altogether I find I get headaches and insomnia. Grains do make me sleepy - so that's why I usually reserve them for dinnertime, to help me sleep at night.
