research help needed

Quote  |  Reply
hey ! just want a yes or no for this one bc i know it is a topic that can be adressed from several points of view.  hope it can take your mind off dieting for a minute :P

Im doing a research paper for my technology in modern society class and for my final im writing about genetic engineering focusing the genetic modification of humans.

I am trying to collect some statistics so if you could just post Yes or No  (meaning: yes, its ok no i dont think its ok) it would be of great help and be a nice addition to my paper.

Note: not trying to stir the pot here. this is simply for research purposes. if you feel uncomfortable posting an answer but would still like to contribute then write me via message.

thanks again guys!

EDIT: thanks guys keep the answers coming. and for those of you who needed more info i should have been more specific.  i am touching base on both sides of the topic: GM for desease prevention and GM for "perfecting" humanity ie. "designing a child" .. the papers main focus is on "perfecting" humanity..but oppinions on both count. thanks!

I do not believe it is morally correct to generically modify humanity.

So, no.
No.
Nope.
No, I disagree completely.
how do you mean, modify humanity how...? like changing stuff about humans, third eyes and stuff? i dont get it! (blonde)
No.
No
Are you including gene therapy in the statement "genetic modification of humans"?

Could you first state exactly how you are defining genetic modification? We already do things that alter the genes of certain populations of cells.

Do you strictly mean recombinant genetics that will alter embryos?
No
No.
i think it should be explored.

its not like we are perfect as we are..so why not learn and see what could be rather than cover your eyes and ears in fear of what might be. i really dont see the difference in doing it to a person or a rat. they are both living things...and i never met a rat i didnt like..but i met plenty of humans that i am repulsed by.

imagine being able to GM out a pedofreak gene... or the gene that makes a body prone to child cancers.

i think it would be worth it.

I agree with ssbuckeye that I cannot answer the question without more information.

If it were possible to cure a genetic disease with genetic modification, as current reasearch is attempting, then I would favor that.

I would oppose all other modifications.

I am also opposed to genetic modification of food sources using gene splicing technology.
No.
OOH..i just thought of this...

explore old sciences in the past that people were in fear of.

like...did you know that they thought any woman that could herbally heal another was a witch and a tool of the devil?

herbal medicine is the devil..lol...thats too funny.
and what sick is the burned people for that.

i would look into the history of science to use it as an example of how fear can retard the growth of humanity.
Yes, but with limitations

It would be ok to cure diseases

Not ok to be used as an alternative to face lifts/breast implants
No
Genetic altering to treat disease?  To cure cancer? Aids? Multiple Sclerosis?  Muscular Dystrophy?  Down Syndrome?  YES

To create a race of super humans? Change eye-hair-skin colors, etc?  ABSOLUTELY NOT
No.
Can't answer without more information.
NO.

I dont think people will stop if they are given limitations. So they shouldnt even start.
