Resisting fatty foods

My biggest downfall is not the exercising, but the snacking on unhealthy foods.  I've gotten a lot better over the past year or so, but I'm falling back into my old habits.  I have a great job, but unfortunately I have to work through my usual dinner hour, so I end up eating right after school, then I get really hungry when I get home around 10:30.  It has butchered my eating patterns! 


Any tips or suggestions on how to resist these foods?  It's so frustrating because I always feel HORRIBLE after eating them, and would much rather lose weight, but I still do it anyway sometimes.

Well, first and foremost, don't buy them to begin with.  If it's not at home, you're less likely to make a special stop to pick them up that late at night.

If your problem is stopping somewhere to pick something up, I'd suggest stocking healthy or not-as-bad-as-the-really-fatty foods at home.  For example, if you crave ice cream, try keeping some Skinny Cow treats at home instead of buy gallons of the full fat stuff.  That way, at least you know you have something yummy waiting for you.  I also really love the sweet fruit, so I stock lots of strawberries, honeydew, watermelon, and cantaloupe in my fridge.  Depending on where you live, though, that might not be so easy.

I don't know how helpful my suggestions are, but I know they worked for me.  At the end of the day, all I'm left with is my own willpower to decide if I eat healthy or not.

That is definitely one reason why I'm excited to go away for university next year.  My family is really into the fatty foods, so we have a lot of it around our house, but we do also have healthy food... it's just a matter of me choosing healthy over not so healthy... but it doesn't help when I ask them not to buy it and they do anyway!

Yeah, that is a bummer.  University will be great, I'm sure.  And yet even there, you'll be around cafe's and roommates who might stock the fatty stuff too. 

I know it's hard.  Belive me, I've been there.  It's just good 'ol fashioned stick-to-it-ness that will get you through the struggle.

Eat peanut buttered toast for breakfast or snacks.  It's fatty and good for you.  Eating a moderate amount of good fat kills a lot of the craving for bad fats.

Unfortunately, I have an aversion to peanut butter... lol.  When I was little I ate it when I was sick and threw up and now I hate peanut butter.

On the PB issue, you were young when that happened. Try it again, even if you start small with some on some rye crackers and build it up. You might be surprised. And if not, hey, you tried!

As for foods... moderate yourself. Have a little of the "fatty" food and more of healthier. But never none of one and all of the other. Variety is the spice of life!

You don't necessarily gain weight if you eat @ 10:30 at night but it seems as if you are stuck with devouring unhealthy, fatty foods? 

Perhaps you are not eating enough protein that will sustain your hunger levels... Or perhaps you need to eat more fat! When I say fat I mean the healthy fat you find in fish, nuts, seeds, flaxseeds, olives, etc. None of this cookies, cakes, etc!!! 

You should try and incorporate some healthy fish into your daily routine that way you are getting healthy protein & fat - a 2 for 1 deal!!! Canned Salmon, Mackerel, Tuna, Sardine, etc are all pretty healthy (be it they are packed in WATER or OLIVE OIL) and are high in protein & pretty inexpensive. They are also very versatile... in that you can put these cans on top of mixed greens, in stir fries, etc! Eating this fish straight from the can at work is easy enough to do as well! 

I definitely do love fish... I should start making tuna salads (salad as in actual green salad).  I guess a big problem in that is I never have time at night/morning to make a lunch, so some days I go without breakfast/lunch, which I know is really bad but I hate eating breakfast.
