Are you absolutely sure about that? Manilow does nothing for me.
I've heard this type of thinking used to justify emotional abuse. "I wasn't cruel and hurtful towards you. YOU chose to respond by getting upset. YOU need to control your emotions better, but I'm not responsible for my actions at all." type of mentality.
I hear things like "When you get angry at someone you're giving your power to them." Guys on the board, does anyone every say this to MEN? Because it sounds a lot like a variation on the idea that women are expected to not show anger.
Denying your emotions is not "empowerment". Taking responsibility for how you affect the world around you is.
