I had a quick question.  When doing the Couch to 5K it says to rest every other day...so it's basically a m-w-f workout thing.  Should I actually rest rest on the other days, or could I perhaps do weights tuesday and thursdays...or swimming.  I'd like to do swimming, but I want to know if this will wear my body out.  Thanks in advance for your help! It depends on your current level of fitness, some people can handle it, others can't.  Try it out and see how you feel.

agreed

I'm doing the Couch to 5k as well and I'm running M-W-F.  I go to the gym and do strength training T-TH-Sun, but I've been working out regularly now for over a year.  If you're new to exercise, you will probably want to do less, but I agree with Sully, just try it out and see how you feel.  If you feel a little sore, that's ok but if you're in real pain, then you've overdone it.

For me, I started swimming first (beginning of March), and then added the running after (beginning of June).  I run Tues, Thurs, and Sun, swim on Mon and Fri, and bike to work (40 minutes each way) on Wed.   Oh, and I strength train on Tue and Thurs as well.  By my Saturday rest day, I can really feel my legs need a break.  Other than that, I'm usually feeling pretty good.

Swimming is probably a good cross training exercise for you, since it will work your shoulders and upper body much more than your legs.  And it's low impact, which also makes it a good counterpoint to running.  Start slow, and see how it goes.

I for sure feel sore, but I don't have shin splints thank goodness.  Exercise is new to me in the way that I haven't actually gone out of my way to do it.  My last job I seriously worked my butt off...I was a landscaper/mower, so on average I walked about 10 miles a day, but I just switched to a desk job and now I am just sitting around.  Since switching to this job, I've gained a lot of weight because of me being stupid...but i've always been a very muscled girl.  I don't look like I weigh as much as I do.  So I am new to exercise this way, but I use to be very physically active in the past with my job...but I've totally lost it.

I think i will try out the swimming on alternate days, but I will wait off on the weights until I have lost my initial 30lbs.  Right now I'm at 209 and want to get to 180.  So yea.  Thanks everyone Cool

Thank you very much!  That's very nice of you, i'm very flattered!

Do you paint? I wish I could paint, I sometimes draw, but just faces.  I so cannot draw objects....it's impossible!  Tongue out

I'm also doing the Couch to 5K and I absolutely love it by the way! I run every other day but mostly Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday and lift weights after. On Monday and Wednesday I do a 30minute abs class. I also swim on Saturday. I often times miss a day a week so I do have a rest day. I have discovered that my body feels the best for my Sunday run after I've had a stress-free weekend and a swim. Since swimming is zero impact it doesn't effect my legs recovery time nearly as much. If you feel that you need rest time but don't want to not work out, definitely try swimming! How do you like the couch to 5k? I've been trying to find someone who is about where I am on it. I am starting week 4 tomorrow.

Well, I feel silly, but I just started it....week one day one was yesterday. haha.  But I do feel really good about it!  Mainly because I bought some sole inserts for my shoes because every single time I run I get shin splints and that was one of my biggest reasons not to run...also because I feel like I look retarted also.  (I have large breasts so I created my horrible way of running...I shuffle my feet so I have less impact, lol...so stupid looking. I fixed that problem with an awesome bra, but I still run like that because that's how I've done it for most of my life.) Anyway, It's awesome that you are on week 4!!!  I can't wait to get to that point!  I really enjoy being outside in the mornings when I run instead of inside in that nasty sweaty smelling gym.  I think on Thursday I will swim because I love to swim and I think it will also help me with my breathing and so many other things.  Keep up the good work!!

Very nice!  I love the arts...I am looking at photography and ceramics, not so much the Track and Fielder type person...more so into just softball, haha.

Well good for you for starting! I was so surprised at how quickly I fell in love with running. I'm getting addicted to it (and if I must have an addiction I'm happy its that one!) I also completely understand the large breasts thing. I have the same problem. I also got a better bra which helped. Also, dropping weight helps you run smoother and I'm starting to really feel that way. I feel more graceful whether it be from practice or losing weight. Keep me updated on how you are doing!

A good program would be to do the running on Mon/Wed/Fri and do strength training on Tues/Thurs/Sat. Then use Sunday as your one day of the week where you do absolutely no exercise at all. I think by "rest" it just means not to do any intense cardio exercise.
