Resting Heart Rate and Calorie Expenditure

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone know if its possible to use your resting heart rate to determine your caloric expenditure for the day? I found a calculator online: http://www.triathlontrainingblog.com/?page_id =483 I'm pretty sure its just meant for heart rate while you're exercising, because according to that calculator I burn 7200 calories a day just lying around.

There is a direct correlation between heart rate and VO2 Max so heart rate can be used as an indicator of level of exertion while exercising.  By measuring duration of exercise and level of exertion it is possible to estimate the number of calories burned during the exercise.

There is no direct correlation between resting heart rate and calories burned.  Therefore you cannot use a heart rate monitor or perceived exertion chart to determine calories burned while not exercising.  There are other ways to get this number like using the tools that this site offers.

I've looked at that calculator too, but became a little unsure after reading the notes:

After a comment from a reader, I made the following change for Women without VO2max: changed “- 0.1263 x weight” to “+ 0.1263 x weight”. The reader noticed that calories burned went down with increasing weight. But that doesn’t make sense. So I compared the numbers to the men’s formula, and I think that should be a plus. The original page I got the formula from is here. Now it seems like it’s calculating too many calories for me, but oh well…
