~~RESULTS~~ St. Patty's Day Virtual Race -- GET OUT AND MOVE!
The members of the Run Around the World thread would like to announce a challenge to everyone out there to get out and move! This St. Patrick's Day weekend we are challenging everyone to a 5K (3.1 miles), 8K (4.96 miles), or 10K (6.2 miles). You can run or walk (no bicycling please) with or without your pint o' stout, to or from the bar, toward or away from the rainbow (yeah, you get it)... JUST MOVE YOUR IRISH SELF!
All you have to do is sign up here for whichever distance you'll be running or walking. Then next weekend (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday), go out and do it (please be fair and only post for the distance you complete). Come back to this thread and post your distance and time. If you're feeling lucky, post your age. We'll tabulate the results early next week and break down the winners by time/distance/age (when noted). Winner gets bragging rights and the luck o' the Irish.
Results!
Nice job, movers and shakers! You beat the leprachaun to the pot of gold and may even have done it without the assistance of a pint o' stout. Thanks to everyone for participating and encouraging! I'll continue to monitor the posts to see if there were any late check-ins, but here's what we have as of Monday night (St. Patrick's Day). The results are listed fastest to not quite as fast. I noted male/female as well as posted age, but the field size of runners was 12 with 10 finishing so in some cases it seemed... a little too "resulty." So, really, unless you had too many pints today, I trust that everyone can do some of the math themselves. ![]()

jfk always making things difficult!! Do it as a 7K. If you want to prorate the results, that'd be great. Otherwise, you'll get your own race. :-)
I'm in for a 5K on Friday. I have a super long run planned for Sunday so the timing should work out.
I am down for an 8K on Saturday, followed by 1 mile fun run with my daughter. Put me down as 39 and considering it a win just to finish.
Erin Go Bragh!!
I'm Scottish, is that close enough? No, not really. I get it. Sigh.
This is awesome! Put me down for a 10K, and I am 32 decrepit years old.
Put me down for a 5 K and am 38 yrs old (for at least another month).
Was planning on running 3 miles for training schedule this Sunday so that will work out and will have to take the car out to make sure official 3.1 miles.
Great challenge! :) I am cheating a bit, since I was already signed up for the St Patrick's day parade run in downtown St Louis. It's a 5 mile distance on Saturday, so count me in for the 8k.
It's my first official 5 mile race, so it's a PR no matter what, but I'll try and hustle a bit extra for the challenge.
Jenka everyone is a little Irish on St. Patty's Day. I'm only Irish by marriage, and if my Italian Grandmother was still alive, she would make me run in orange!
Welcome all! Glad you could join us! Remember to encourage everyone and that walking is absolutely allowed! Thanks!
I've never "raced" a 10K before, so I'm curious to see how it goes. I've raced two 5Ks and two 8Ks, but never a 10K.
Wrm2105, 10Ks are SO different from 5Ks and 8Ks. Like, worlds apart. Not.
Ha! I couldn't help it. ![]()
I guess I was referring to racing strategy more than anything else, especially given how I have passed over that distance during my racing history. I know (at least somewhat) how hard I need to exert myself in a 5K or 8K, but I fear that I'll just run out of gas in the final mile or so of a 10K.
But then again, what do I know about racing strategies?
Looking forward to hearing how everyone's races go this weekend!!
wrm2105: Race strategy.....hmmmm.....I am a bit of a newby at this racing thing. I would say that my main strategy it to finish and not bonk. (lol)
Happy running tomorrow and Sunday!!
That was the day that I learned the meaning of the term bonk--the drastic and rapid demarcation between my avg. pace in the first 22 miles versus the final 9 miles truly suggested that some serious bonking had taken place. I'm hoping that this experience never happens again!
28 y.o. 5K in 29:41 -- a PR! I have to say that for running a race of one in the real world, I could truly feel all my virtual competitors moving with me and definitely stayed motivated to run hard. I even got pre-race butterflies!
wrm, I know what you are referring to but for opposite reasons. I tend to start races out too fast... of course, my races are on average about 20 miles less than yours, but the principle is the same. I finally have my groove down for 5Ks and am getting there with 8Ks, but I'm with wili in my current mentality for everything over -- I would just like to finish most of the time and not feel like I'm going to drop to the ground gasping for air.
BTW, rk, if you feel like not measuring things out in your car, try using www.mapmyrun.com -- you can use a map to plan out what your run is and it will tell you the mileage. Glad to have you running!
Pgeorgian, that is a fantastic personal challenge! Good luck!
Happy running everyone! I look forward to seeing the times! Next on the list: a Memorial Day Run!!
wrm and primadonna, congrats on your races!
This morning I ran the St Patrick's Parade Day Run in downtown St Louis. There were somewhat over 8000 runners, the vast majority of which registered as 'non-competitive' runners. You don't have to be a fast runner to be considered 'competitive', you just have to pay an extra $3 and register by an earlier date. Competitive runners started first, and had chip timing. I lined up a the back of the competitive pack, but the non-competitive runners started about a minute later and were soon passing me by in droves. That wasn't so much fun, since I usually start in the back and pick people off. I'm not used to having people stream by me. :)
It was a much prettier day than expected. Forecast was for relatively heavy rain, but it barely sprinkled the whole time, and it was just the right amount at that. About 45 degrees for the temp.
I've got a 20 miler scheduled tomorrow, so my goal was to finish around 55 minutes, nice and easy but still a tempo pace for me. Every mile was right around 11:00 except for mile 3 which I did in 9:55. So, my final chip time was 54:11.
So, my official stats: 30 years old, 8k (5 mile) race, 54:11 chip time. And I am quite pleased with that!! :D
