Interesting site snow - thanks for sharing it.

I feel really wealthy now.
Cool thanks for sharing.
thanks for fixing my link!  :)
That site is very interesting... but I put in what would be a very low income in the US, $15,000 -- it would be exceptionally difficult to live off this amount if you had the usual expenses (housing, food, clothing, heat, forget about transportation & health insurance) and a person with this income is still in the top 12% of the world.

If you had that kind of money in a so-called "3rd world" country, you might be able to live like a king (assuming you stayed alive).

But in the US, not so much.

*thinking about this*

so we have a lot, but it doesn't go very far....

?
It is possible to live on a low income and enjoy life. I'm really not much above the $15,000.00 level. I own a home with propery I live in the country, my 2003 car is paid for. I have a savings almost equal to years income. I have mortage (low) , car insurance, school loans, utilities, What I don't have is shopping trips all the time. Eating out daily, and I don't owe on any credit cards -never have, never will. I use mine  and the balance  is paid off montly, I use it so that come summer I can use my frent .flyer miles to go on vacation to visit my family for free. There is a big difference between wants and needs . Our country has because one of wants and their credit cards reflect that. I'll keep my car for atleast another 6 yrs. sure there are pretty new ones but I only need it for transportation. put that payment in the bank over acouple years and you can pay cash and they will give you a good deal if you walk in and say I give you this much cash for that, they don't have to do any paperwork buy at the end of month when they want to make a sale. I also buy a new used car, I saved myself 8,000. on a car with  a thousand miles on it because someone bought it and deceided they wanted a bigger engine. Furniture -hit the sales, if you can't pay cash, the 6mo. same as cash works only if you can do  the 6mo. or you'll get hit with a big interrest rate.  I go out with friends to movies, plays , concerts the things I love.  Living beyond your means can be draining. I have the option of doing what I want. I also have the whole summer off , fall break , xmas, spring break. I have retirement, health insurance. Just stop buying and plan. I'm getting ready to buy some investment property that will return my investment in less than 2 years and pay for my retirement. Go on line and  look at sites like penney pinchers and they can give ideas on how to save money.  Sorry went on and on everyone, this is just something I 've really worked on and passed on to my kids they have beautiful home and good incomes but not the credit card mess.  Live well everyone.
I think that's great, gyspie, but I have to ask -- in what part of the country do you live to be able to do all that on "not much above...$15,000.000"?  I'm honestly curious...and awed!
wow, gypsie is a teacher and she makes about $15,000?

is that for part time?

because if that's full time - you should be making more than $15,000. imo.  where ever you live...
my husband and I live on just over 30,000 a year.  We just got married. :)  We have some credit card debt that we are trying to pay off ($8K from wedding/engagement), live in a rent-controlled but nice apt. (700/month) in Tallahassee, my car's paid off and his will be in about a year.

We just spend very little.  $50 a week or so for groceries.  $20-25 a week for eating out.  About $40 a month for shopping/entertainment.
that's awesome nat, but do you feel like you could do the same on half that money?  even if you took away your credit card debt?
if it was just me, i would have to get a roommate or look for lower rent housing.  Since the debt is really all in my husband's name i wouldn't have to worry about it!  But my food bill would PLUMMET.  I could do $30-$40 a week groceries if it was just me and be eating GOOD; I could probably stretch to a little less than that if i needed to.
I would also barely use the AC so the electric bill would be lower...  to tell you the truth, tho, my spending (clothes-shopping, buying gifts etc.) would probably rise b/c my husband helps me keep a cap on that.
I don't think the BOTH of us could do it on that little tho, if that's what you're asking.
well, yeah, like if something (heaven forbid) should happen to your husband, and if you had a child...  where I live (and I live in the country) I don't think I could make it on $15K...

although I like to be resourceful - it would be great to see if I could overcome my brown thumb and maybe grow some vegetables, if I had a yard...

also, having a low housing payment would help - I would like to have that myself!
You know... I don't quite get this kind of site.  It's interesting and all but honestly it's just trying to get people to donate money.  The income comparison is pretty unfair considering it doesn't take any "standard of living" into account.
Okay all, I live in south east, I work 30 hrs a week as teacher's aide for reading) I'm taking classes part time to finish some requirements, will be about a year to finish teaching degree. I have a business degree but found my jobs boring. I have to  go help with  taking care of my mom so can only do part-time. When done with school I'll make about 35,000 to start. I want kinder. or 1st. grade -I'll think I'm rich.  But I enjoy the children the most. I've had other jobs more money but didn't enjoy.  I make about 21,000  now including what x is  paying me.  I moved into my rental property due to pending divorce . I'm remodeling the house , doing everything I can myself and will hire for other jobs. The biggest thing is saving and paying cash. Not living above means. We just  never got into oweing money. Even when x and I were together we have been semi retired since mid 40's. If can't afford it I just don't buy it. I don't know if that help anyone or not, but I live pretty well.
I was just curous as to location, because when I was living on $28,000 (before taxes -- actual paychecks worked out to about $1600/month) in the Chicago suburbs, I was broke.  I don't have a lot of debt or anything to worry about either.  It was really hard to just pay basic living expenses on that.
you guys should try bankrate.com.  There's a nifty little calculator there for credit card debt.  You punch in how much you owe, your APR, and how soon you want to pay it off, and it'll give you the REAL minimum.

Just to let you know, I have a card with a $100 minimum payment every month.  To pay the whole thing off in three years would take something like $340 per month.

I'm hoping to relocate in the near future.  I live in a very expensive area, but my rent is still pretty cheap since I tolerated roommates.  Once my job ends, I'm leaving California.
I think my reply is gonna be very like the rest -  with 13,000 CAD per annum, it is hard to say I am rich. I am content, though. And no credit card debt! And no car, no pets, just some bills, oats, carrotts, beans, and potatoes. And books. And medication (ouch!) Talk about eating in moderation...
yachtracer I live in Tn. just outside a large town. We have 3 super walmarts, kmart, mall  and lots of places to eat. Three theaters and a play house. I live about 1.5 hrs from a major city if I want to really go out on the town or concert. I could never live in chicago. I grew up in PA. and visit every year I couldn't afford there either. KY isn't bad for cost of living, parts of GA. or LA. our pays aren't high but you can get a beautiful house here really cheap compared to some other places. Our taxes might be little high. We have 9% sales tax on everything except food. Gas is 2.77 gal. right now.  Some of my favorite places in Tn. are Cookville, crossville, Nashville. Check out the towns on line and see the cost of living. I also lived in Greenville,SC for awhile and I love it there and would go back in a minute. You can rent for about 500.00 here for a 3 bedrm. house. The house I just sold,  10yrs old 1,800 sq. feet with 2 car garage and 3 acres almost doubled in last 10 years, but is still affordable. My mortage was 700.00 mo.  I heard the midwest is a good place  to live also and to retire anyone here that lives in that area?
Hmm...I make 12,000 a year and am in the top 13% of the world.  Amazing, isn't it?  Here I am wondering how I get by on $1000 a month, struggling to pay rent and insurance, and food, and gas, and utilities...but how lucky am I to have heat and running water and the ability to go out to eat occasionally (and I mean very occasionally!) and have a phone and computer- and on top of all of this higher education.  Who cares if it is low income in the US we choose to live this way.

I live in IN but am from KY, I've never had to live in NY or LA or anywhere high cost, but if I did, I may struggle a little more, but I would find a way to make it on whatever I'm getting paid because I know what I am getting paid for is worth it.
