How to get rid of a migraine. Please help, I need it gone in less than an hour!

Quote  |  Reply

I have a final in one hour and a really awful migraine. It's to the point where light, noise, etc make my head spin and my eyes water. I'm horribly nauseous and moving my head at all makes my stomach roll over itself. Text that I'm looking at is really blurry and because I can't really focus, I know that I'm not really writing complete sentences or with correct grammar.

This test is 75% of my final grade so I can't afford to fail it. I've already taken migraine medicine and sinus pills (I have sinus problems which sometimes feel like migraines) and neither has done anything for the pain.

What can I do? Stressing out over it is making it even worse. Please please help me

Put ice on your forehead, like an ice pack wrapped in a damp towel.  The medicine should start working soon but that may help temporarily.

IF I can catch my quick enough.... a BC or Goody's powder to help dilate the blood vessels and a soak in a hot tub with neck, shoulders, and head (ears back) . . .

Drink LOTS of water!  Go in your bedroom, close the door and just relax for 10 min or so... giving yourself time to de-stress will help ease the tension.  I get stress migraines a lot and I find that if I just let myself relax it really helps... maybe not taking the migraine away but at least reducing it to a headache.  Hope you feel better!  Good luck on your test!!!

This may be too late, but I agree with the icepacks and lying down. Just don't let yourself fall asleep. I wish you lots of luck on your final - I was still struggling with the worst of my anemia in my exams and it was very hard to focus for me then just feeling tired, and as a migrane sufferer myself I can only imagine how lame this must be >< Meditate if you can, as well, anything to destress. Good luck!

I hope you were able to take your final with the migraine.  I can feel for you, I also suffer from them.  Sometimes, if I absolutely have to be somewhere, I drink a warm coke.  I know it sounds bad, but someone told me to do it once and it got me through.

i ended up taking it and getting sick halfway through. the lights and noise and actually taking the test was just too much for me :( i did finish, though, and hopefully I did okay. I don't even really remember what was on it right now, much less what I wrote.

thanks for all of the suggestions.

I agree with the ice, on top of that I have found a cold shower helps, as cold as I can stand. just for a couple of minutes, don't give yourself Hypothermia!

I hope you did OK, I often have a hard time speaking (I slur) and thinking straight, it is a little disconcerting. My left hand and face usually get numb too.

Good times...

As an aside, does anyone have a medication they find helpful? I was on Zomig, but have recently discovered it makes me feel worse.  I am pregnant and cannot take it, they have given me Vicodin, but I have only taken it once for the three headaches I have had while pregnant. It seemed to work better than the Zomig. But it still creeps me out.

My physician prescribed Maxalt for me - I'd take one pill at the first sign of a migraine and lie down for about 15-20 minutes.  Works like a charm!

Try calling your professor and explaining what is going on and request a make-up exam.  If you've been an active (engaged and interested) student during the class, most professors will understand and work with you.

Sorry too late.  This strategy works best BEFORE the exam.  I take maxalt and a cup of coffee for my migraines.  Knocks them out quickly.

I know it goes against the grain, but a cup of coffee always temporarily helps me (it usually flares back up in 45 minutes or so)

I get them about once every three months.  Some things that help me...

  1. Ice Water
  2. Caffeine
  3. Anything mint (toothpaste, mouthwash, a peppermint, or stick of gum)
  4. Apply pressure by pinching the top of your nose right between your eyes
  5. Pain killers
  6. darkness
  7. Silence

Hi, I know this is too late, but I agree with the people who suggested the medication "Maxalt". It's a prescription pill that dissolves in your mouth and usually works within an hour or two. I get migraines a minimum of 3 times per week and have found that lying down in bed and putting an ice pack on my temple on the side of my head that hurts most (put the ice pack under your head so your temple is pressing against it on the pillow), helps the medication work faster and helps with the pain a little until the meds kick in. I have to tell you though DO NOT USE HEAT!!!! That only makes migraines worse!!! Use ice on your temple, cold water over your head etc.

I recently had a baby and am now breastfeeding so I haven't been able to use my Maxalt for a year now, but I use T-3's to dull the pain and that along with an ice pack on my temple, darkness, silence, and lying down, is a complete lifesaver.

Good luck and I hope you did well on your exam.
