Ridiculous food products

Quote  |  Reply

I've seen "reduced sodium tablesalt" before.  Why don't people just put less salt?  Now tell me that's not ridiculous :P

What products have you seen that are pretty ridiculous?

I've always wondered how they managed to make salt with reduced sodium. Table salt is NaCl... to reduce the sodium, they'd have to dilute the sodium salt with some other type of salt... maybe CaCl or KCl?

I love candy with the label  "fat free!!"  lol

  • Sugar free oreos.
  • 100 calorie packs.
  • Diet soda.
  • Breakfast cinnamon swirls ---- they're smaller then your hand and there supposed to satifiy you!?
  • Fiber one/ Quaker oatmeal pakets.

And ecttt.

Salt substitute is potassium rather than sodium.  It's used by people who need to drastically reduce their sodium.  I agree that it's better to train your palette to expect less salt, but always remember that sodium is an essential nutrient that we would die without.  Too much is not good, but too little is worse.

A low salt diet will help with high blood pressure and other medical conditions that you may or may not develop when you get older.  Having a taste for high salt foods can be a hard habit to break, so it's a good thing to learn moderation when you are young.  Other than that, it has no effect on actual weight loss.

Sprite... now with "natural flavours". Makes me cringe.

I think PB2 is pretty ridiculous. Peanut butter is considered a health food because of its good fats. Defatted peanut powder doesn't do it for me.

100-calorie candy bars. Cookies with fiber. Reduced-fat potato chips. And this isn't a food, but Glaceau Vitamin Water.

YES. Vitamin Water. So unnecessary... Drink real plain water and eat fruits and vegetables! Problem solved.

"Light" butter.  You can't remove calories from oil.  All they do is add air or water, and charge you the same amount for less product.  Just use less  butter!

Salad dressing... Check the lable it's #1 base ingredient is flavored soybean oil folks!  Your paying over $2 a bottle for flavored soybean oil!  YUCK!

I think non-fat mayo is ridiculous or low-fat/no-fat gooey pastries! Are people that stupid to think that those are actually healthier than the originals?!

bacon-wrapped hot dogs. they just sound like a heart attack in a bun.

That gum commercial that referes to sugar free gum as a better snack alternative...what!

anything labelled 'weight control' - prepackaged oatmeal springs to mind.

A food by itself will not control your weight. Your lifestyle will do that.

I love it when i go to the market (even trader joe's) and i'll look for chips to eat with some guacamole ... and i'll see a bag that says something to the effect of "less or reduced salt" and the sodium count in mg is higher than a "normal" bag... WTF?

Was in the dried bean section of the store the other day for white beans and found "ham flavored northern white beans." How disgusting is that? I just prefer putting ACTUAL ham in with my beans when they cook.

Anything marketed as a food item but labeled "calorie free" (read:  Walden Farms).

Anything marketed to kids with the label "made with real fruit juice."  (meaning, 10% fruit juice, the rest is water, artificial flavorings, and HFCS.)

"potted imitation meat product"

er...nothank

I've got two.

1. The high fructose corn syrup commercials which say HFCS is "just as good as sugar! It comes from corn, it's all-natural!" Oh, jeez.

2. Fat-free half and half. End of story.

Didn't get the first one, but fruit juice makes me SO MAD.  That's why I drink Naked Juice now.  1lb of fruit per bottle ^___^.

Ew, someone offered me an "orange drink" the other day and it was zero percent juice.  The ingredients had Sugar for the sweetness, Acid for the tartness, and Artificial flavor.  I bet it cost as much as real juice too.

OH.  My peeve in food is those bags of vegetables that come Pre-soaked in horrible fake cheese sauce or butter.  Who decided to make veggies bad for you?!  I'd rather buy my bag of normal broccoli, go home, and put a slice of 30 calorie nonfat cheddar on it.  No thanks to a 300 calorie serving of broccoli!
