Does rinsing canned food really reduce the salt?

If I rinse canned beans, artichokes, etc. will I reduce the added sodium content significantly?


Answer

To significantly reduce the salt, you will have to rinse canned food under running water.  In a Duke University study, 76% of the sodium was reduced when canned tuna was when rinsed under running water for one minute.  For canned vegetables, rinsing under water for a minute removed 41% of the sodium.  But if you are looking to remove all of the sodium, then buy food labeled "No Added Salt" or "Salt Free".  In addition, continue to check the Nutrition Facts and the ingredients on the label because sodium is contained in certain additives as well.
