If my RMR is 1050, what if my BMR?

Quote  |  Reply

BMR with a very light/sedentary lifestyle.

I'm 5'0/5'1, 17 years old, and 104 lbs, looking to lose about 8.

Who said your RMR is 1050?

I had it metabolically tested, with one of those breathing machines.

BMR and RMR are supposed to be pretty close - I believe RMR can be tested with a breathing machine like you did - BMR is tested by sitting in a room not moving all day - harder to test, but typically gives a pretty close number.

So for our purposes, they are interchangable. I think you are asking about AMR - or how much you burn given a level of activity. Which at sedentary would be approximately 1250, at light 1450.

However, I'm a little worried about your RMR being so low. Typically, teens should burn more calories than an adult. And if you were 20 or so (with your stats), your BMR should be around 1200.

Which means despite being younger, you have a lower than normal RMR.

Any chance you've been undereating?

Yes, for a couple years I struggled with anorexia ): 600-800 a day. Do you know of a way I can increase my RMR from doing that? I've been eating 1200 - 1400 or so daily for about a year, with binges maybe once a week. I feel so out of control.

and you want to lose weight why? your at where your supposed to be for your height. 96 pounds is going to make you LOOK and FEEL sick. do u really want that? people would kill to be where your at right now.

back to rmr...mine is about 922 and i'm 5'4 122 pounds. i had mine also medically tested and its considered low.

I want to lose inches mostly, I don't care about my weight in numbers. My measurements are 32 - 25 - 35 with 21 inch thighs, and those are just too big for me.

ok so you want to tone not lose weight then. so for that you nix the losing 8 pounds thing. you can stay at 104 and eat a healthy 1200-1400 cals plus a free day every week like you have been. what you want to do is more strength training. gaining muscle will BOOST your rmr because muscle is active tissue and 1 pound of muscle is equal to 1 pound of fat. along with the sensible eating plan and focusing more on building muscle, you will look leaner and stronger. and not gross at 96 pounds with flabby loose skin which is what I think will happen if you lost those 8 pounds.

concentrate on muscles and you lose the inches and not mess up your rmr

Will I just look bigger than, with muscles UNDER my new layer of fat? How do I burn the fat on top while increasing muscle?

Dang that's a low RMR.  I haven't had mine tested but according to the calulator on the site my BMR with a sedentary lifestyle is 2450 cal, then again I'm a 6' tall 17 yo male.  It's amazing how different our bodies can be.  anyway the multiplier to convert RMR to BMR with a sedentary lifestyle is 1.2, so you take your RMR of 1050 and multiply it by 1.2 to get your BMR so = 1260 is about your BMR

what fat??? your 104 pounds! i know your recovering from being anorexic but seriously your not fat and no you wont look bigger strength training. at your age you should be eating a minimum of 1500 anyway and your already at a deficit when u eat 1200-1400.

do a half hour weights and half hour cardio if your that determined.

also remember if u keep that mindset of wanting to be 96 pounds, your plan has eating disorder written all over it once again. i would suggest talking to a professional as well because your goals are drastic and i think your not quite into recovery if your still thinking your fat at the weight your at now. there is nothing wrong with 104 pounds with your stats. period.

Just wanted to note that, since you're only 17, 1200-1400 calories/day is still too little for you.  If you were healthy, you could potentially lose weight by eating no less than 1500 calories/day.  HOWEVER, you are underweight (defined as a weight that you can only maintain by severely  undereating) and have done serious damage to your metabolism.  That means that you need to be eating 2500+ calories/day to fix your metabolism and get to a healthy weight (which does *not* mean fat - just within a reasonable BMI range; I believe a BMI of 20 is normally considered reasonable for situations like yours).  The folks in the Health & Support forums are probably your best bet for advice for your particular situation.

I used the tools on this website to maintain my 103 and got:

You should consume about 1,415 calories a day to maintain your goal weight of 103 lbs. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

At a sedentary level.

You should consume about 1,622 calories a day to maintain your goal weight of 103 lbs. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors. At light level.

You should consume about 1,828 calories a day to maintain your goal weight of 103 lbs. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.
At moderate level.

I'd say I'm somewhere between light and moderate. How many calories should I be eating to decrease inches? Not so much lose POUNDS but make me less flabby and big? And what should I do? I'm at a total loss ):

Also, I'd say those numbers are too high for me with my slow RMR and all. If I ate those around those numbers for a while, would my metabolism speed back up again?

mayella - the tools on this website are meant for adults, not teens. In the Weight Loss forum FAQs there are links to calculators appropriate for teens.

You need to eat more to recover your metabolism, and i know over in the Weight Gain and Health & Support forums, they recommend eating 2500 calories at least.

If you want to lose inches, but not necessarily pounds, my recommendation is to:

  1. Eat more (at least 1800, but probably more), lots of protein
  2. Lift weights - adding muscle will help you look less "flabby" without necessarily changing the weight on the scale.
