RMR
So i've been looking around at different websites, trying to calculate what my Resting Metabolic Rate is, but I keep getting a number variation. I'm 5'7, 141 lbs, female, and on one site calculator, my RMR is 1432, while on another it's 1764 - can anyone help me understand where this difference is coming from?
sometimes there are inconsistencies in the way RMR is defined...some sites use it as a synonym for BMR while others distinguish between the 2. i like www.phord.com/cc
it looks like your BMR is about 1400 and RMR is about 1675 at moderately active. So, i'd say that the difference you are getting is due to the differences in terminology. BMR is what you'd burn in a coma, RMR is what you burn not engaging in extra activities but merely resting.
does this make sense?
http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators /basal/basal.html = 1476.6
http://www.shapefit.com/basal-metabolic-rate. html = 1432
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php = 1483
http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalc alc.htm = 1827
I found out the same basic results that you did.
My guess is that calculators involving BMR in some cases figure in the Activity Level (Sedentary to Very Active) but in other cases the BMR is figured without regard to Activity Level. Also, there is a thing called Thermic Effect of Food, since 10% of our calories are burned in processing the food we eat. I do not know if this TEF is figured in the BMR calculators.
Thank you; both of you cleared it up for me.
I've always treated them as the same thing. Try this website, which calculates both. For my stats there's a difference of 26 calories per day between RMR and BMR, with RMR the lower number. They also post the equations (Harris Benedict for BMR, Mifflin for RMR).

So you can keep track of what you eat - which enables you to analyze your foods and receive the following:
- Health Score of your overall diet
- Warning when you approach your daily calorie limit
- Overview of the good and bad nutrients
