RMR=Calories Burned

Quote  |  Reply

Hi All

I am 42 and post menapausal (surgical) on HRT.  I've also had some issues with thyroiditis which seems to be balanced right now. My biggest problem is motivation right now but as I'm putting together a plan for myself I'm wondering what you all think of this:

I've calculated my RMR as aproximately 1400 calories so that's what I've decided to use as my caloric intake daily.  I've started exercising twice per day (Stairs at work for 30 minutes/1 hour of eliptical at the gym in the evening) and doing these activities burns about 1400 calories (at least at my current fitness) according to my heart rate monitor.  The question is this:  Although I feel good, I'm wondering if this is dangerous and I'll be creating a "starvation" deficit for my body and therefore a health risk?

Thanks in advance for the input

If those extra activities alone are burning 1400, you definitely need to kick up your calorie intake.  Your deficit should be no more than 1000 a day.

I agree.  Two pounds a week weight loss is what is considered safe.  That is a daily deficit of 1000 calories.  Also with such intense workouts make sure you are getting enough protein.  The current reccomendations for intense workouts is 1.4-1.6 grams of protein daily for each kg of body weight, greater if you are lifting heavy weights.  Also it never hurts to take a day or two off a week.  Your body needs a break.
