Okay, so last night me and my family went out to eat at Bonefish Grill for my birthday (which was on Tuesday) and they surprised me by TAKING US TO DISNEY WORLD. Taking us TODAY. ED was not at all ready to mess up "schedule", especially not with a 16-hour road trip, but I'm trying my best to stay calm now - I didn't last night.

We'll be staying in a rented condo, with three bedrooms and a kitchen. The thing that bugs me is the car trip - is 16 hours too long to simply spend being sitting. For about 7 or 8 of those hours I'll be sleeping, since we're partly driving at night.

I'm also thinking of packing some snacks to take on the road, as well as breakfast. How does this look?

  • Packet of homemade "instant" oatmeal with my usual add-ins
  • A tablespoon of almond butter
  • Hard-boiled eggs (some for b-fast, others to snack on)
  • Fresh, washed fruit
  • Raw assorted nuts
  • Pita pockets
  • Lara Bars
  • Greek yogurts
  • Protein powder packets (in case)
  • Trail mix
  • Can of tuna
  • Can of black beans (once again, just in case - I love beans!)
  • A few cups of plain yogurt
  • Cottage cheese

GIRL, YOU'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD.

Seriously, I'd kill for that. So what if you're going to be sitting down for 16 hours - DISNEY WORLD! Lol. Besides, you will be walking a lot in the park, I expect, so you will need to be a) well rested before and b) well fueled during.

Your food list looks good to me. How many days are you going for, though? Do you have a "plan" for each day? As in, what're you setting aside for more breakfast-y purposes and what's your car (and park) food?

Not sure if this rule has changed but in the past you were not allowed to bring any food into the amusement park itself.

There are a lot of differenrt resturants in the park, lots of choices to choose from.

If you are bringing can goods with you remember to bring a can opener.

Oh. D: Hm. I always take food with me into theme parks, but I'm in a different place obviously. Do they search your bags? If not you could plausibly sneak in trail mix and larabars, yoghurts, and the hard boiled eggs.

I suggest taking baggies (plastic) and small tupperware tubs for more leak-prone items, like the yoghurt and the tins.

The restaurant thing is a good point. It may be a very good chance for you to challenge yourself, Zeb - enjoy the restaurants and (gasp) takeaway, too. Heh.

I googled it just to recheck, you can bring in small amounts of foods, but no coolers.

In the water parks you can bring in picnics.

Yep, I'm bringing snacks, and since we have a kitchen in our condo (and we're on a budget) we'll be eating breakfasts and most of our dinners at home. Only lunch will be in the parks, and I'll definatley be bringing things such as bars, nuts, trail mix, and maybe even some yogurt (I put it in a plastic baggie with ice cubes in my purse!) into the park. They typically don't care if you bring snack food items, just not like, whole meals.

There's a Whole Foods in Orlando (hopefully mom will let us go!) so I'll still be making my usual breakfast and will be able to pick up some extra snackables. ^^ Even the Disney menus have improved signifigantly. Almost every place (even food stands) have veggie burgers or grilled chicken entrees, and some places are even more impressive; there's a restaurant with an entire vegetarian menu, and some places serve things like quinoa and other exotic foods!

Good, good. Then so long you're prepared, remember your aim is to meet at least your gaining minimum, not worry if you exceed it (particularly as you will be in motion in the park), and most importantly, have fun!

hey guys,

so i actually just got back from doing an internship at Disney and they do allow food in the park, but just to let you know they do actually have some healthy options.  You can always sub apples or grapes for the fries. They sell yoplait yogurt at most places as well.  The entrees can include grilled chicken, or I have even gotten a veggie wrap with hummus and everything.  They have salads everywhere and most of the stores sell trail mix and healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruit.

OMG have fun! don't worry about it, i went to disney world last december, at this point i was eating again, but it's still exhausting to walk around the park! plus, so what if you're sedentary in the car? everyone snacks in the car because you're bored and snacking on junk or healthy good things is all part of the fun of road trips, and the worst that will happen if you exceed cals one day is you'll be a bit closer to goal weight. it's a win-win. You will have so much fun, i'm jealous! ride all the rides, take pictures with mickey and all of them. I loved the part where they have mickey and minnie's homes, they're so cute! epcot is also awesome and has the best food because there's a section for different countries, and i got morrocan food. but there's veggie options all over the park, and don't concern yourself too much if it's not overly healthy, it's just a few days.

Thank you guys so much! I feel a lot better now. I already told myself that I'm going to just try to "order what sounds good" and not just get plain ole' "salad with no dressing" all the time. I'm also going to try to keep track of cals so much. I AM going to make sure to hit 2,500 every day AT LEAST, but I'm not going to freak out if I don't get to eat all my snacks or anything. I just want to focus on having FUN - something I haven't been able to do in forever.

And you're right, one week is not so bad. Once I get home everything will be back to normal. Hopefully I'll take some pictures to post too; my profile pic is the same one from three years ago. X_X

That should be the closest Whole Foods in that area.

Have fun!

that would be my list for such a trip,

but i'd add;

  • a head of iceburg lettuce or some celery (for snacking)
  • popcorn (lightly salted)
  • baby carrots (you didnt seem to mention much veggies)
  • some type of 5 grain wheat thin crackers (you didnt seem to mention much whole-wheat carbs other than oatmeal)

sounds like amazing fun tho! i hope you enjoy it!

which reminds me, i'm going to philadelphia this sunday and i'll have to pack some food too!

oh, and another tip;

at restaurants, i always get salads with grilled chicken/steak/fish (whichever sounds like the best protien), and enjoy the bread they bring out as well. It allows me to have a full meal (for me is carbs, protien, and veggie), without avoiding the delishious looking warm bread while waiting for the main meal.

it works out VERY well, they just end up serving slightly too large amts of w/e protien (i try to stick to 3-4 oz, tho i'll usually end up eating all 6 or w/e.)

International_chick: ... so you do know this is the Weight Gain forum, right?

wow, i feel silly.

thanks for noticing lalabanana.

sorry about that then. >.<

I'm back! The trip went great!

We were on a super tight budget, so all of us usually just packed our lunches to take to the park (they didn't care - must be the economic crisis... they're just glad you bought tickets!) and we always has breakfast and dinners in the condo. Some days we ate out (we splurged at a steakhouse one night) but most of the time we just ate whatever we could cook.

I was also still able to have ALL my snacks, so I didn't restrict any. I also couldn't exercise other than walking from show to show or ride to ride in Disney World, but I still ate everything that I normally do - nighttime snack included. I think having a kitchen and a condo made it a lot easier, since Disney hotel rooms typically don't have very good food storage options.

I didn't make it to the Whole Foods, but there was a Publix nearby and they actually had some pretty good stuff. I was able to find Chobani Greek yogurt there too, which I love, and Ezekiel bread.

Welcome back Zeb! I'm glad to hear things went so well and that you were able to get in all that you need. I'm quite sure that all the walking was more than enough exercise though! BTW I love Chobani and Ezekial too ^.^ We have good taste.

It was great. I brought along a little Chobani cup and MANY other snacks to the park everyday.

Plus, at Publix, the big 16 oz. containers are only $3.00! They're usually around $6.00 here in the midwest!

Really? Wow. Down south everything is cheaper - food, gas, housing...I live in New England, and its usually around four or five dollars for a big tub.  But, the small single serve containers are continuously on sale 10 for 10 or 12 for 12....yay! Well, yay for the wallet anyways...environment not so much...
