Rolled oats & green tea?
I always have rolled oats with skimmed milk, flax seeds and cinnamon for breakfast. (I cook the oats in water the night before and leave them in the fridge) And today I got this weird thought: what if I would cook them in green tea instead of water? Only good could come of it, right? Has anyone ever tried this?
(sorry if this has already been asked before; I`ve searched the forums and didn`t manage to find something similar)
If you like that taste of green tea I don't see how it could be a problem.
I did it in chai-flavored soy milk the other day, the flavor didn't really come through but it wasn't bad or anything.
I used to put green tea on my cereals and thought it was yummy. I'd say - give it a go! If you don't like it, then don't do it again ![]()
I cook my oats in green tea sometimes. The flavor isn't extremely strong, but I like it. Usually when I cook them in green tea I'll add my typical flaxseed and wheat germ and wheatberries combo as well as almonds and some milk and sometimes frozen blueberries. I love almonds and green tea together. Experimenting with cooking oats in different things is fun.
I've started adding an egg white to oatmeal. I mix it with skim milk before adding the oats, then microwave, stir again, and finish in the microwave. This is an easy and yummy way to get protein for breakfast. It's like pudding.I'll have to try some of the other ideas here.
Thanks for the replies, guys. :) Egg whites in oatmeal sound very interesting indeed, must try that.
I usually coat my whole wheat bread slices in egg white (mixed with a mashed garlic clove or two) and then pop them in the toaster, on max durration. That turns out delicious. (though the slices sometimes stick to the toaster a bit, but they are easy to get unstuck - nothing too scary)
I have a total egg aversion, but would love to reap the protein benefits of the egg whites in oatmeal. Do the whites impart any sort of flavour?
I've made oatmeal with tea AND coffee! I copied this from my journal:
Chai Tea Oatmeal: I got the idea from Clean Eating magazine to make oatmeal with tea instead of plain water. I brewed black tea (using 2/3 cup water), then added some vanilla soy milk & a sprinkle of salt, then returned it to a boil. I then added 1/3 cup of steel cut oats, followed by a spice mix 5 mins later (1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ginger, 1/8 tsp each cloves, nutmeg, cardamom + 1 tbsp ground flax). When the oats were cooked, I added 1/2 tbsp sugar & 1 tbsp dried cranberries for colour. It smelled great! It tasted pretty good too but it wasn't as chai-spicy as I would like. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to try oatmeal with coffee and cocoa powder... "Mocha-meal"! (Sunday morning edit: It was even better than the tea oatmeal! I used 2/3 cup coffee, splash of vanilla soy milk, 1 tbsp flax, 1 tsp each cocoa powder & cinnamon + 1/2 tbsp sugar... So tasty!)
Kmleela--I don't notice the egg whites giving any flavor. It seems to take away flavor! The oatmeal tastes much more bland with the egg whites, perhaps because I don't add salt. The texture is really good--like pudding. I add spices and molases for flavor. The chai oatmeal sounds great. I'll have to give it a try. Is there some advantage, besides taste, to steel cut oats?
Steel cut is the least processed, so it has the most nutritional value. Or so I have read.
