Rotating calorie intake?

Quote  |  Reply

I just started my diet plan, and originally came up with 1600 calories per day to lose some weight. A friend of mine said that rotating cals or "zig zagging" is a good way to keep your body losing weight. I am not sure if you should wait to do that until you are stuck at a particular weight, or if you do it the whole way through to see more results. I googled this, and saw naturalphysiques.com/tools.php?itemid=64  ;and they had a zig-zag calculator there. I looked at it, typed in my weight 180 lbs, and it came up with:

An "average" cal intale of 1440.

Sunday: 1440

Monday: 1620

Tuesday: 1440

Wednesday: 1620

Thursday: 1440

Friday: 1620

Saturday: 1440

Is this a good idea this early in the game?

Let me say first that I am no expert and only speak from my own experience on these things. :)

I think I have one of those wonky metabolisms that get comfortable way too quickly. I was eating 12-1400 calories for a couple months and did not see any movement in the scale at all. After a "reset weekend," I started really cycling my calories and creating big differences between each day:

  • Sunday: 1600
  • Monday: 2000
  • Tuesday: 1400
  • Wednesday: 1800
  • Thursday: 1400
  • Friday: 2200
  • Saturday: 1600
  • The weekly average for me is 16-1700 per day, plus I have a cheat day where I don't count calories at all every three weeks or so (I usually do that on Friday or Saturday so it's still part of the high-low cycling). So far I've had success with zig-zagging, as have lots of other people here on CC.

An important thing to remember when cycling is that you don't ever want to have a deficit of more than 1000 calories per day, so just keep that in mind when creating your cycling schedule. I think cycling works for me because it's a bit more flexible than just having one goal per day; for example, I'm going tailgating tomorrow, so I'm going to make that my 2200 calorie day instead of today (today will be around 1600).

Check out j3nn_dot_net's profile - she cycles her calories as well and keeps a weight loss blog.

    Good luck!
